#NFLBuffs: Witherspoon Shines In Week One Victory

September 10, 2019 | Football

Seven former Colorado players saw action during the first week of the 2019 NFL season.

Ahkello Witherspoon led the NFL Buffs this past week with a strong defensive performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 49ers beat the Bucs 31-17 on Sunday and Witherspoon sealed the game with a 25-yard interception on Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston.
In addition to sealing the game for San Francisco, Witherspoon's pick-six gave the 49ers their third interception of the day, helping them eclipse their total from the 2018 season in which they only recorded two the entire year. In total, Witherspoon tallied one touchdown, two solo tackles, three passes breakups, and one interception. All-Pro teammate Richard Sherman, who had a pick-six of his own in the victory, had high praise for the third-year cornerback following the game.
Keeping up the defensive trend was Cowboys cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, who also recorded a key takeaway in a 35-17 victory over the New York Giants. Awuzie had four tackles, three of which were solo, as well as a defended pass and a fumble recovery on the day.

David Bakhtiari and Mason Crosby picked up a win in their season opener as well when the Packers defeated the Chicago Bears 10-3 on opening night last Thursday. Bakhtiari picked up some praise for limiting Bears linebacker Khalil Mack's pressure on Aaron Rodgers, as he allowed only one quarterback pressure on 24 pass blocks, 12 of which were on Mack. Crosby had a 39-yard field goal and one PAT on the night.
Paul Richardson recorded four receptions for 36 yards in his first game back from a shoulder injury that sidelined him for most of the 2018 season, though it wasn't enough as the Redskins fell to the Eagles by a score of 32-27.

Against the Raiders on Monday night, Phillip Lindsay recorded 43 yards on 11 carries and added 23 more yards on four receptions in the Broncos 24-16 loss in Oakland.

Second-year cornerback Isaiah Oliver recorded one solo tackle in the Falcons 28-12 loss to the Vikings.

Jimmy Smith suffered a knee sprain on the second drive of the Ravens dominate 59-10 victory over the Dolphins and he is expected to miss "multiple weeks" according to head coach John Harbaugh.
