Buffs Slip To Fifth on Final Day of SMU Trinity Forest Invitational
September 10, 2019 | Women's Golf
DALLAS — Despite a strong start in the first two rounds of the SMU Trinity Forest Invitational, the University of Colorado women's golf team was not able to do the same in the final round and slipped from third to fifth overall.
The Buffaloes were tied with Baylor after Monday, but a tough day at the 6,154-yard par 72 Trinity Forest Golf Course hindered just about everyone on the Buffaloes' roster. CU recorded a 20-over 884 for the tournament after shooting a 12-over 300 in the final 18 to finish in the top half of the field.
"The team overall struggled a bit today unfortunately," head coach Anne Kelly said. "We have some work to do on wedge play and putting, but there were a lot of positives to take away this week. It's a long season and we just need to keep improving each week."
Oklahoma State took home the team victory with an 866 (2-over), while Texas Tech moved up three positions to finish second with an 8-over 872. North Texas ended up third (875) and Baylor took fourth (878). CU finished 11-strokes in front of the sixth-place team, Memphis (895).
Colorado was led by senior Kirsty Hodgkins, who entered the day as the tournament leader. Unfortunately, she was not able to hang on to her lead despite shooting an even 72 as Texas Tech's Sophia Garcia shot an 8-under in the final round (64) to move up three spots and take the advantage from Hodgkins. Garcia finished the tournament with a 10-under 206, besting Hodgkins by four strokes.
"Kirsty played very solid golf today and this week," Kelly said. "It is tough when another player shoots a 64. Kirsty hit the ball well all three rounds and today just could not quite get the putts to fall like she did in the first round. She put in good work this summer and came back prepared to play her senior year. She should have many more opportunities to win this season."
Hodgkins recorded a 6-under 210 with rounds of 67, 71 and 72 to lead the Buffs. She started the day off with a birdie on No. 1, but off-set it with a bogey on the next hole. She made par on the following hole, but repeated her pattern of a birdie followed by a bogey on the next two holes to stay even. She finished the front nine with three additional pars and one birdie for a 1-under 35.
As she started the back nine, she was unable to stay under-par as she earned a bogey on No. 10. She did birdie on the next hole, but after a par on No. 12, she recorded her fourth bogey of the day and was unable to erase it as she made five straight pars to finish the round with a 1-over 37 on the back nine.
The second finisher for the Buffs was redshirt sophomore Alisha Lau, who shot a 75 (3-over) in the third round to finish at 7-over (78-70-75--223), which was tied for 20th. In the last 18, she recorded one birdie, 13 pars and four bogeys. Her 33 total pars led the team at the tournament.
Sophomore Malak Bouraeda had been tied with Lau after the first two rounds, but Bouraeda recorded an extra stroke to finish with an 8-over 224 (74-74-76) to tie for 25th. Bouraeda made two straight pars to start, but had some trouble on the 349-yard par 4 No. 3 hole as she went 4-over. She recovered very nicely with three straight birdies to bring her score back to 1-over and in the final three holes of the front nine, she made par, a bogey and one double. She was able to shoot even in the back nine with a pair of birdies, two bogeys and five pars.
Freshman Sophie Johnson finished her first collegiate tournament tied for 35th with a 12-over 228 as she shot rounds of 76-75-77. She had a decent round despite six bogeys. She also had one birdie and 11 pars. Sophomore Kelsey Webster tied for 44th with her 15-over 231.
Also competing as an individual was junior Elle Otten. Otten moved up one spot from Monday to finish 56th overall after shooting a 23-over 239.
Colorado will be back in action September 16-17 at the Cougar Cup in Pullman, Wash.
NOTES: Hodgkins' runner-up finish is the eighth top-five finish of her career, which puts her in a tie for first in CU history. She is tied with Erin Kerr…Her scorecard of 210 is tied for fourth in school history for the lowest 54-hole score on a par 72…As a team, the Buffs improved from last year's scorecard of 896 (299-294-303).
