Buffaloes Head To Washington State Cougar Cup

September 15, 2019 | Women's Golf

BOULDER — Less than a week removed from its first tournament of the 2019-20 season, the University of Colorado women's golf team will be back in action, September 16-17, at the Washington State University Cougar Cup in Pullman, Wash.

The field will include 15 teams: BYU, Cal, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Gonzaga, Idaho, New Mexico, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine, Seattle, San Francisco, Washington, Washington State and several teams will also have individuals playing.

Play will start Monday, Sept. 16, at 8 a.m. PT at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club with a shotgun start. Teams will play 36-holes on Monday and will finish the final 18-holes on Tuesday with another shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. PT.

As the team looks ahead to the tournament, head coach Anne Kelly was happy with what she saw from the Buffaloes in the first tournament, Sept. 9-10.

"We are still pretty young, with the exception of Kirsty, so it's just a matter of getting back into the competitive team model; knowing your score not only affects you, but your team as well. Trinity Forest Golf Course is a hard course to start on; its way different than anything else we play. It was good experience."

Freshman Sophie Johnson was able to play in her first collegiate tournament and will be back in the line-up with sophomores Malak Bouraeda and Kelsey Webster, as well as redshirt sophomore Alisha Lau and senior Kirsty Hodgkins. Another freshman, Issy Simpson, will also compete at the tournament, playing as an individual.

"Sophie Johnson has good experience under her belt (as a freshman)," Kelly said. "I think the others know exactly where their weak points are and what they need to work on over the next couple of days before we leave. The course will be a little better suited to what our players are used to. Up in the Northwest it will be a little cooler. There is a chance of rain and most of our players are used to that, so I'm looking forward to it."
