Golfers Finish 14th In Maui Jim Intercollegiate

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The University of Colorado men's golf team never got untracked as unit here this weekend, finishing 14th in the Maui Jim Intercollegiate.
Arizona State rallied to win its own tournament, firing an 11-under par team score of 269 in the final round with the course set up the toughest in the three-day event; the Sun Devils finished with an 802 total (38-under par), good for a seven-shot win over second-round leader Arizona (809). Clemson (811) and Pepperdine (815) finished third and fourth, while Utah and Southern California tied for fifth (825).
Colorado's quintet here didn't post a lot of big numbers – just 11 holes worse than bogey – but didn't take advantage the first two rounds when scoring opportunities were more prevalent. In the end, CU finished 14th in the 15 team field with an 14-over 854 score.
Senior Daniel O'Loughlin paced the Buffaloes, finishing with a 2-over 72 to tie for 18th with an overall score of 5-under 205 on the 7,081-yard, par-70 Mirabel Golf Club course. He had a team-best 10 birdies along with an eagle with only seven bogeys, as he tied for 12th in par-5 scoring over the three days (4-under) and 19th in par-4 scoring (2-under). It was the 13th time in 27 tournaments at Colorado that he finished under par, along with two even par efforts.
"The course was set up tougher today but the results were more of the same," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "This was obviously a disappointing tournament. Other than two good rounds from Daniel we didn't have any rounds under par which made things very difficult for us."
The rest of the Buffs finished down the line, though once again the scores weren't terrible, just a lack of numbers in the red. Sophomore John Paterson tied for 57th with a 5-over 215 score as he recorded CU's best score Sunday with an even-par 70; junior Cole Krantz tied for 64th at 9-over 219; senior Victor Bjorlow placed 69th at 12-over 222; and sophomore Kristoffer Max ended tied for 71st at 14-over 224.
Bjorlow scored CU's most birdies in the final round with four, but those were countered by six bogeys and a double that led to a final round 74, which is also was Krantz shot. Max recorded a 73 Sunday.
Arizona State's Cameron Sisk captured medalist honors, finishing up with a 5-under 65 for a 14-under score of 196, which was good for two shot victory over Clemson's Turk Pettit, the second round leader who shot a 69 Sunday.
The full Buffalo team will return to action in two weeks, as CU heads south on I-25 to take part once again in New Mexico's Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque on Sept. 27-28. Two players, senior Ross Macdonald and redshirt freshman Adam Matteson will compete today and Tuesday in Colorado State's Ram Masters Invitational in Fort Collins.
