Golfers in Fifth After Two Rounds of the UNM Tucker Invitational

September 27, 2019 | Men's Golf

Sophomore Paterson tied for Sixth, Seven Back of Lead

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of Colorado men's golf team had a solid, consistent day here Friday as the Buffaloes finished the day in fifth place after two rounds of the 65th Annual University of New Mexico William H. Tucker Invitational.

No. 6 Arizona holds the slimmest of leads after shooting a 14-under par 562 score for 36 holes, which leads host New Mexico by a single shot.  BYU is in third at 9-under 567, San Diego State holds fourth (570) with the Buffaloes rounding out the top five with a 1-uner 575.

Sophomore John Paterson is pacing the Buffaloes here through two rounds on the 7,555-yard, par-72 UNM Championship Golf Course, as he posted a 68-72—140 (4-under par) scorecard Friday.  He tied his collegiate career low round in the morning and his 140 score is his college-best for 36 holes.  He had a very consistent day, scoring eight birdies and 24 pars against just four bogeys, and played the 20 par-4 holes combined at 5-under, the best in the field..

Senior Daniel O'Loughlin is tied for 21st after recording a 73-71—144 even-par effort; he tied for a team-best nine birdies, also fourth-best in the field, with 19 birdies opposite seven bogeys and a double.  He played the par-5 holes at 6-under, tied for third-best overall Friday.

Senior Ross Macdonald is tied for 33rd after fashioning a 75-71—146 effort on the strength of eight birdies and 19 pars (with eight bogeys and a double, the latter unfortunately coming on his final hole of his morning round).  He played the challenging par-3s here at 1-under Friday, tied for fourth-best overall.

"I'm really pleased with how we responded after our performance in Arizona," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "We were embarrassed of how we played there, so we couldn't wait to get back out into competition again.  We had 10 good days of practice and then a good day of prep here (Thursday).  The guys came out and really executed today."

Junior Cole Krantz is tied for 63rd after posting a 73-79—152 (8-over) scorecard.  He had two birdies and 13 pars in the morning, but his second time around the UNM layout resulted in a single birdie and nine pars with eight birdies, the latter coming in bunches (four of his first six holes and four in his last six).

"It was a good, solid day overall," he continued.  "This golf course challenges every part of your game, and we did a really nice job for 36 holes all day.  John is in a great position for a top finish.  He hit a lot of really good shots, and when he didn't, his short game saved him.  That is a huge characteristic of John's, and he also learned a lot from playing here last year."

Redshirt frosh Adam Matteson, while tied for 69th with a 9-over 153 total, can trace almost all his stroke overage to two holes; he opened with a triple bogey in the morning and endured a quadruple one in the afternoon.  He was 7-over par after just five holes to start his day but settled down to shoot an 81; he had three pars to start his second round before scoring three straight birdies before taking an 8 on the par-4 17th.  He was resilient; he came back and birdied 18 on his way to a 72, slicing nine strokes off his morning score.  His nine birdies tied O'Loughlin's team-high.

"Adam had a goofy first round, and played really well in the second round, even with the one 8 (the quadruple)," Edwards said.  "An even-par score on this course will always help us, and he's a battler."

BYU's Peter Kuest is the individual leader entering the final round, as he is in with an 11-under par 133 score; he blistered the UNM track his first time around with a 9-under 63 that featured six birdies and a rarity on any level of golf, back-to-back eagles.  He owns a four-shot lead over Arizona's Trevor Werbylo.

The third and final round will commence at 7:45 a.m. Saturday; Colorado will be paired with Utah, Loyola-Marymount and Florida Atlantic.

NOTES: Matteson's nine-stroke improvement between rounds was second-best in the 92-man field (New Mexico State's Aidan Thomas bested his morning score by 11 shots (83-72) … The average score Friday was 74.23 (74.21 in the second round, 74.25 for the first) … There are 20 36 players under par through 36 holes and another five holding at even …  The Buffs are second in par-5 scoring (17-under), ninth in par-4 scoring (plus-21) and 11th in par-3 scoring (11-over) … CU is third in birdies with 37 and has an even 100 pars among its quintet … CU, New Mexico and New Mexico State are the only schools to have played in all 65 tournaments named for William H, Tucker … Colorado is shooting for its best finish here since 2012 when it finished second; the Buffs' highest since was a tie for fifth in 2016.
