Women’s Golf In Eighth At Cougar Cup

September 16, 2019 | Women's Golf

PULLMAN, Wash. — The University of Colorado women's golf team started off the Washington State University Cougar Cup on a good note on Monday, carding its best team round (289) of the season and is currently eighth with a 4-over 580 (289-291).

"It was a very long, cold day and there was rain the last few holes," head coach Anne Kelly said. "The team members really fought hard, but unfortunately we made too many errors, especially on the par-5s."

Oregon State is the team leader after recording a 13-under 563 at the 6,239-yard par 72 Palouse Ridge Golf Course. They are followed closely by Oregon (566) and Denver (568), who are second and third, respectively.

"Tomorrow the goal is the eliminate some of the unforced errors and focus a little better," Kelly said. "On this course you have to shoot under par to be competitive. We have the capability to do so, we just need to get everyone on the team going at the same time. We have talented players and it's early in the season. We are gaining good experience and are finding out our weak points. We will keep working to improve."

Sophomore Malak Bouraeda leads the Buffs after the first day. She carded a pair of 70s for a first-day score of 140 (4-over) and is tied for sixth. She played incredibly well in the first 18 holes, sinking six birdies. Her only noticeable error was a double-bogey on No. 17, but luckily she was able to bounce back well. She also made nine pars and had a pair of bogeys in the round. In the second 18, she kept the consistency going with four birdies, 12 pars and two bogeys.

"Our day was highlighted by Malak's steady and consistent play," Kelly said. "She really managed her game well despite a rough couple of holes."

Freshman Sophie Johnson also had a nice day as she recorded the first sub-par round of her collegiate career with a 2-under 70 in the first 18. She totaled four birdies, 12 pars and had a pair of bogeys in the round. Her second 18 was another solid round and saw her record an eagle on the 475-yard par 5 No. 17. In addition to her eagle, she made 12 pars and had five bogies for a 3-over 75. Her scorecard of 145 (1-over) is tied for 23rd.

Redshirt sophomore Alisha Lau is currently tied for 36th. Through two rounds she is 3-over (147). She shot a 3-over 75 in the first round due to three double bogeys, but played a very steady round in the second with an even 72 where she had a pair of birdies, 14 pars and two bogeys.

Senior Kirsty Hodgkins had an uncharacteristic day, shooting a 75 in the first round and a 74 in the second. She is currently tied for 49th with a 5-over 149. Over the course of the 36 holes, she earned three birdies, made 25 pars and had eight bogeys.

"Kirsty unfortunately had a rough day and just could not get anything going," Kelly said.

Sophomore Kelsey Webster shot a 6-over 150 and is tied for 53rd. She earned a 2-over 74 in the first round and a 76 (4-over) in the following round. She had six birdies, 20 pars, eight bogeys and a pair of doubles.

Playing in her first collegiate tournament as an individual, freshman Issy Simpson had a spectacular inaugural round, shooting a 3-under 69. She recorded five birdies, 12 pars and four bogeys for the score and was tied for sixth after the first 18-holes. Although she did not have the same luck in the second round, she played well enough to shoot a 4-over 76 and is currently tied for 23rd with a 1-over 145.

"Issy Simpson had a very good first round and was playing well in the second round, but unfortunately had a couple of tough holes," Kelly said.

Oregon State has a pair of individuals tied for first at the tournament. Ellie Slama and Issy Taylor each recorded identical 68-70—138 scorecards and are 6-under heading into the final round. There is also a trio of athletes tied for third at 139.

The second day of action starts Tuesday with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. PT.

NOTES: Simpson's 69 in the first round is tied for the second best round by a Buff in their first collegiate round. It is the best score for a Buff since Kristen Coleman shot a 71 on Sept. 13, 2010…Three Buffs, Bouraeda, Johnson and Simpson, recorded at least one sub-par round on the day…Johnson recorded her first collegiate Eagle on par-5 No. 17 during the second round.
