PULLMAN, Wash. — After another steady round, the University of Colorado women's golf team finished seventh at the Washington State University Cougar Cup Tuesday.
Â
The Buffaloes recorded a 2-over 290 in the third round to finish the 54-hole tournament with a 6-over 870. CU moved up one position in the standings during the round and were just two strokes behind sixth place San Francisco (868).
Â
Oregon State, which led after two rounds, hung on for the win, finishing with a 20-under 844. OSU shattered the tournament record (864 by Idaho in 2016). Second place went to Oregon (852), while Denver and Washington tied for third (854).
Â
The highlight of the tournament for Colorado continued to be the play of sophomore Malak Bouraeda, who moved up three positions and into a tie for third. Her consistent play saw her shoot 2-under 70s in each of her three rounds as she finished with a 6-under 210, which is the lowest score of her collegiate career. Her score is also tied for the fourth lowest in school history on a par 72.
Â
"I felt like I was driving the ball well this week," Bouraeda said. "The coaches told me to play aggressive and be confident before we even started and I used that mentality going into this event. Ultimately I think that is what led me to shoot the numbers I did."
Â
She started her round on No. 7, making a pair of pars before sinking her first birdie of the day on No. 9. On the back nine, she recorded her second birdie of the round before following it up with two more pars. Entering No. 13, she was sitting at 2-under, but a third birdie put her 3-under. She stayed at 3-under for another two holes, but a double bogey on No. 16 put her at 1-under. Bouraeda finished the back nine with a birdie and par.
Â
With six holes left to play, she made par on No. 1 and then birdied No. 2 before recording a bogey on the third. She repeated that sequence as she finished her round at 2-under.
Â
The turnaround from last week's 224 to this week was a 14 stroke improvement.
Â
"I was a lot more confident this week. This course fit my eye a little better than the one in Dallas. I think I just hit the ball much better yesterday than I did in Dallas. I also made a lot more putts. I still had a few bad holes, but I was able to come back from those and get it back close to even every time."
Â
Freshman Sophie Johnson finished the tournament tied for 27th after recording a 2-over 218, which included her third round score of 73. She recorded her second eagle of the tournament on the 475-yard par 5 No. 17 for the second straight round. She played a pretty consistent round with two birdies, 11 pars, three bogeys and one double.
Â
After a tough first day, senior Kirsty Hodgkins rebounded on Tuesday with a much better performance, carding an even 72. Over the course of the day, she earned five birdies, nine pars, three bogeys and one double. She moved up nine positions to tie for 40th with a 5-over 221.
Â
Redshirt sophomore Alisha Lau shot a 3-over 75 in her final round to score a 6-over 222 and tie for 42nd. She had a rough start to the day with a triple bogey on the first hole, but after that, she was able to recover nicely by making four straight pars. She finished out the round with three birdies, three bogeys and seven pars.
Â
Sophomore Kelsey Webster shot a 6-over 78 in her final round to finish tied for 66th with a 12-over 228. She recorded her first eagle of the season on No. 17, in addition to making two birdies. She also had seven pars, six bogeys and two doubles.
Â
Freshman Issy Simpson finished her first tournament tied for 42nd. She carded a 77 (5-over) in the final round to record a score of 222. Over the course of the event, she recorded nine birdies, 32 pars, 11 bogeys and two doubles.
Â
Overall the Buffs recorded a 14 stroke improvement from last week, and although the courses are quite different, it's exciting to see the changes they are making to get better each week.
Â
"We still have a lot to improve on as a team, and that is really exciting," Bouraeda said. "We are a really young team, but I'm excited because I know we are going to be a pretty good team in a few months."
Â
Washington's Karen Miyamoto won the tournament with a 9-under 207. Miyamoto moved up two positions in the final round for the win, passing runner-up Ellie Slama (Oregon State), who recorded a 208.
Â
NOTES: For the second straight tournament, the Buffs had a top-five finisher as Hodgkins was the runner-up at the previous tournament…This is Bouraeda's second top-five collegiate finish; she was the runner-up at the Rebel Beach Invitational as a freshman.
