Buffaloes In Sixth After Two Rounds At The Molly Collegiate Invitational
September 30, 2019 | Women's Golf
PORTLAND, Ore. — The University of Colorado women's golf team had a few tough breaks on Monday and is currently sixth after shooting rounds of 306 and 298 on the first day of the Molly Collegiate Invitational.
Â
The Buffs recorded a 28-over 604, which is just one stroke behind fifth-place Washington. The Huskies recorded a 304 in the first round before scoring a 298 in the second.
Â
"We played some good golf today, but we had too many doubles and triples once again," head coach Anne Kelly said. "The course we are playing is a championship course that has hosted many USGA events. It has very challenging greens and we need to do a better job tomorrow managing those. Tee to green the team hit the ball well, we just need to have better patience and concentration when we get around the greens."
Â
Stanford has a seven-stroke advantage on the field heading into the final round as the Cardinal carded a 3-over 579 (291-288) on the 6,141-yard par 72 Waverley Country Club course. Oregon is second (586), Georgia is third (594) and San Diego State is fourth (597). Â
Â
Sophomore Alisha Lau leads the way for Colorado through 36-holes, and is tied for eighth individually. She shot rounds of 77 and 71 for a 4-over 148. Her first round started well with a pair of birdies followed by four straight pars. But then she hit a bump in the road, recording four bogeys and a par. She finished the round off with four pars and three more bogeys for the 5-over round.
Â
"Alisha played a very solid second round today, which was exciting to see," Kelly said. "She has had a long road back from her surgery last year."
Â
Her second round also started well, but this time she was able to play a little more consistent and stay under par. Starting again on No. 8, she made five straight pars before earning the first birdie of the round. On No. 14, she tallied a bogey to go back to even, but Lau focused and finished the back nine with two pars and two birdies. As she started back on the front nine, she had a bogey on No. 1, but bounced back with six pars to finish.
Â
The Buffs have a pair of athletes tied at 16th with sophomore Malak Bouraeda and freshman Sophie Johnson as both finished the day with 7-over 151's. Bouraeda carded a 74 in the first 18-holes, which included three birdies, 11 pars, three bogeys and one double, and had a 77 in the second round with two birdies, 12 pars, two bogeys, one double and a triple.
Â
Johnson shot a 6-over 78 in her first round with one birdie, 12 pars, four bogeys and one double. She saw improvement in the second 18, shooting a 73. In that round she had five birdies, nine pars, three bogeys and a triple.
Â
Senior Kirsty Hodgkins had another tough day, shooting a pair of 77's. She is tied for 32nd overall with a 10-over 154. She shot identical rounds with three birdies, eight pars, six bogeys and one double in each.
Â
Playing in her first tournament as a member of the scoring team, freshman Issy Simpson is tied for 60th. She shot a 164 (20-over after carding rounds of 83 and 81.
Â
The Buffaloes also have one individual in the mix, sophomore Kelsey Webster. She is currently tied for 51st and is 15-over (159). She recorded an 80 and a 79, respectively, in her two rounds.
Â
Stanford has a pair of individuals in the top two spots on the leaderboard. Andrea Lee is first with a 4-under 140 (71-69) and Angelina Ye is second with a 2-under 142 (69-73). They are the only two individuals under par after two rounds.
