Battey Boosts Buffs With Double-Double In Win Over Utah

January 12, 2020 | Men's Basketball

BOULDER — Colorado sophomore forward Evan Battey recorded his third career double-double in a 91-52 win over Utah Sunday afternoon.

Battey led the Buffaloes in scoring with 17 points and had 10 rebounds on the night. It was his second double-double of the season and his fourth game this year with double-figure rebounds. He also had a season-high eight field goals, just one short of his career high of nine against USC last season. Battey's first seven rebounds of the game were offensive that led to three putback layups and a grab off the glass that led to a D'Shawn Shwartz layup.

"Evan Battey was a beast tonight," head coach Tad Boyle said. "I don't know what other adjective I can use to describe him on the boards. He went after every offensive rebound. He gets those things. He set the tone with our offensive rebounding in the first half… Offensive glass is something we've really been preaching and talking to our guys about. It was great to see Evan come out and get that done."

Battey, from Villa Park, Calif., averaged 8.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game and started 11 contests in his debut season last year for Colorado. He was the recipient of the Male Freshman of the Year Honor at the CU Sports Performers of the Year (CUSPY) Awards.

This year, he is averaging 9.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per game and has started every game this season. He currently leads the Buffs in offensive rebounds (47) and field goal percentage (.573) and is second on the team in total rebounding behind junior forward Tyler Bey. Coming into the game Sunday, Battey ranked seventh in the Pac-12 in offensive rebounds (2.7 orpg), and 11th in overall rebounding (6.5).

"That's the thing I always try to exploit with any team, it doesn't matter the team," Battey said. "I give my team extra shots. That's just my game plan every game."

NEXT UP: The Buffaloes will travel to Arizona this week, where they will face Arizona State onThursday at 7 p.m. (Pac-12 Network) and Arizona on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. (Fox).
