Colorado Hosts In-State Rivals

January 22, 2020 | Tennis

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team looks to build onto its 2-0 start this weekend when they host CSU Friday at 2 p.m. and follow it up against Air Force at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Despite being without star sophomore Sara Nayar, the Buffaloes opened the 2020 season with a pair of wins in Fresno, Calif., last weekend. The team swept Southern Utah by a score of 7-0, then conquered Fresno State Sunday 4-2 that included three crucial single match wins from freshmen.

Colorado will put its depth to the test as the team heads into Friday's match against the Rams with the school's longest winning streak intact. The team will lean on their strong freshmen crew that includes Antonia Balzert who went 4-0 last weekend including two point-clinching doubles team victories. Sophia Derivan was the only other CU athlete last weekend that won both her singles matches, including a 6-0, 6-0 performance against Southern Utah.

This weekend is one for the rivalry books as Colorado is undefeated against CSU but suffered a loss against Air Force last year, 4-3, in their house. The Buffaloes are a combined 118-17 (.874) against the four Division I Colorado women's tennis programs all-time.
