February 17, 2020 | Women's Golf
LAS VEGAS — The University of Colorado women's golf team struggled on Monday and is currently tied for ninth at the Rebel Beach Invitational.
Â
The Buffs recorded a 13-over 301 in the first round, but another rough round (295) put them at 20-over for the day. Their scorecard of 596 is tied with Gonzaga, which shot rounds of 304 and 292.
Â
"We got off to a terrible start this morning," head coach Anne Kelly said. "We did not play very well. We need to really step up our game."
Â
Southern California shot an 18-under 558 through two rounds to lead the field and has a 14-stroke advantage on the runner-up, Fresno State (572), which is the only other team under par. BYU is third (586), New Mexico is fourth (590) and UNLV rounds out the top five (594).
Â
Sophomore Malak Bouraeda is the CU leader after the first day. She shot a 3-over 75 in the first 18 holes, but rebounded with a 2-under 70 in the second round to card a 1-over 145, which is tied for 15th overall.
Â
"Malak had a good comeback after a pretty rough start," Kelly said.
Â
In her first round, Bouraeda sank just one birdie on the par-4 No. 10 and made 14 pars. Her second round was much better and started great with a birdie on No. 13. She recorded a bogey on the following hole, but then recorded three straight pars before her second birdie of the round, putting her 1-under as she went to the front nine. In the following nine holes, she made eight pars and sank another birdie to improve her score to 2-under. In her final three holes, she recorded a birdie, made par and finished with a bogey.
Â
Second for the Buffs was sophomore Alisha Lau, who recorded a 4-over 148 to tie for 21st. She carded a pair of 2-over 72 rounds. In her first round, she sank a pair of birdies and made 13 pars. But she also had two bogeys and one double. Her second round saw her record just one birdie along with 14 pars. She also had three doubles. Â
Â
Freshman Sophie Johnson also saw improvement from her first round (77) to her second round (74). During her first round, she made 11 pars, six bogeys and had one birdie. Her second round was slightly better with three birdies, 10 pars and five bogeys. Her two-round total of 151 puts her in a tie for 35th.
Â
Playing in her first stroke play tournament for CU, freshman Ellie Gower is currently tied for 46th with a 9-over 153. Her first round was just a tad better as she carded a 4-over 76 with two birdies, 10 pars and six bogeys. She scored a 5-over 77 in the second round, finishing with one birdie, 12 pars, four bogeys and one double.
Â
Senior Kirsty Hodgkins returned to the lineup for Colorado and had an extremely rough day. Her first round, a 4-over 76 counted for the team, but her second round was disqualified as she signed an incorrect scorecard. Â
Â
"We played a little better this afternoon, but without Kirsty's score, we dropped way down from where we would have been," Kelly said. "Hopefully this is a lesson we all learn from; it was a careless mistake, but she had enough guts to call it on herself."
Â
Playing as an individual, sophomore Kelsey Webster is 64th overall. She scored a 15-over 159 with rounds of 80 and 79. Combined, she made 24 pars along with nine bogeys and three doubles.
Â
USC has the top three individuals at the tournament. Gabriela Ruffels leads the field with an 8-under 136. Alyaa Abdulghany is second (139) and Allisen Corpuz is third (140).
Â
The second day of action starts Tuesday at 8 a.m. PT.
