February 22, 2020 | Men's Golf
PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team slipped two spots into ninth place here Saturday in the 16th annual Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, as scores were significantly higher in the second round.
No. 19 Auburn turned in the best score in the second round, a 5-under 283, to take over the lead with a 563 (13-under) team score. No. 50 Charlotte remained in place, three out of the lead at 566, while Boise State (573), Denver (574) and North Texas (575) make up the rest of the top five.
The Buffaloes, ranked No. 82 in the nation, were tied for seventh entering the day but slipped into ninth after posting a 5-over 293 in the second round and 6-over 582 through 36 holes. Yet, CU is just nine strokes out of third place.
The conditions and course set-up were much tougher for the second round. After 13 players scored rounds in the 60s on Friday, only five managed to do so in the second round.
One of those were by CU sophomore John Paterson, who turned in a 4-under 68, the second-best score on the day on the 7,305-yard, par-72 Classic Club Course layout. Combined with an opening 72, he's in at 4-under 140 which has him tied for sixth. He had a team-high five birdies with 12 pars and a single bogey, and had a 33 on the back nine, tied with six others for the best score on that side. He has played the 20 par-4 holes through two rounds at even par, tied for 12th-best in the 119-man field.
Senior Daniel O'Loughlin, the team's stroke average leader (71.1), rallied to shoot an even-par 72, which has him at 2-over 146 and tied for 40th. He started the day with three straight bogeys and then went birdie-bogey to remain 3-over through five. He gathered himself in birdying three of the next six holes to get back to even. He did get to 2-under after an eagle on par-5 14th, but bogeyed the next two holes and eventually parred out for his 72. He's played the par-5s at 5-under, eighth-best overall.
Senior Ross Macdonald carded a 4-over 76, which coupled with his first round 71 – CU's best opening day score – has him in at 3-over 147 and tied for 43rd. His second birdie of the day on No. 17 got him back down to just 2-over, but he unfortunately closed his day with a double on the par-5 18th.
Junior Cole Krantz had opened with a par Friday but started the second round on bit of a rollercoaster ride, with three bogeys, a birdie and a double bogey in his first six holes to get to 4-over quick. He finished up with a 78, overall now tied for 62nd with a 6-over 150 score.
Redshirt freshman Adam Matteson recorded a second straight 5-over 77 for a 10-over 154 total, tying him for 84th. His scorecard Saturday was identical as his one on Friday: one birdie and 12 pars against four bogeys and a double. Despite his struggles, he's played the par-3s here at 1-under, tied for fifth-best in the field (as is Macdonald).
He opened with five straight pars before back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 6 and 7; he was hanging in there at 3-over until finishing his day with a double on the par-5 18th. He was plus-4 at the turn and settled down on the back nine with a birdie and two bogeys.
Two Buffs are competing here as individuals. Senior Victor Bjorlow had his fourth best round (out of 16) this season, firing a 1-under 71 Saturday; he's tied for 55th with a 5-over 149 score. He had a very steady day in tough conditions with four birdies and 11 pars against three bogeys. Sophomore Kristoffer Max is tied for 70th in the standings at 7-over 151 after he shot a second round 77. He was hanging in there at just 2-over through 15 holes, but had a bogey and double to end his day.
"A really wonderful round from John, CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "Very good. Victor was quite good as well, and Daniel brought it back (from Friday). The conditions were difficult today and the guys did a really good job of competing. It was maybe our best day of the year in that regard, and I was really impressed with the team there. We are on the verge of playing some great golf but have to eliminate some of the mistakes we are making. There are simply too many unforced errors that are being made for us to shoot low scores."
Oregon's Tom Guent held on to the individual lead, though following up his opening round 64 with a 74 Saturday; after scoring 10 birdies on Friday, he managed just three in the second round. He owns a one-stroke lead over a quarter of players heading into Sunday.
The third and final round is set for Sunday. The Buffalos will be paired with Florida Atlantic, Fresno State and host Wyoming and will start on the No. 1 tee at 8 a.m. MST.
