Sophomore Paterson Finishes in 11th
PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team couldn't make up any ground and finished in 10th place here Sunday as the 16th annual Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate came to a close.
No. 19 Auburn ran away with the event, shooting 9-under par as a team Sunday to finish up with a 22-under 842 score. No. 50 Charlotte entered the day three back, but had a 6-over 294, the 15-stroke swing eliminating it from contention though still finished second (860). Denver, ranked No. 109, was the surprise team of the tournament, finishing third at 861, the only other school under par. Colorado State was fourth with an 864 (even), while Oregon and TCU tied for fifth with 2-over 866 scores.
The Buffaloes, ranked No. 82 nationally, shot a 4-over 292 on Sunday, and in the process, dropped from ninth into 10th with an 874 total, which was 10-over par on the 7,305-yard, par-72 Classic Club Course layout.
CU sophomore John Paterson produced CU's best performance here, as he closed with a 1-over 73 that gave him a 3-over 213 for the weekend, good for an 11th place tie. His second round 68 was CU's best individual round over the three day event, as he had a consistent performance across the board with 11 birdies and 36 pars against six bogeys and a double, the latter coming on No. 11 Sunday that prevented him a second straight day in red numbers. He played the 12 par-3 holes for the weekend at 1-under, tied for sixth-best overall, and also played the par-5s at 5-under.
Senior Ross Macdonald closed with an even-par 72 that kept him at 3-over for the tourney, his 219 score tying him for 37th. He was 2-under through 15 holes before endured two bogeys over the last three holes. Those were his only ones of the day as he had two birdies and 14 par, the latter giving him 38 for the weekend, ninth-most in the field.
Junior Cole Krantz wrapped things up here with a 2-over 74, which pushed him to an 8-over 224 for the meet, tying him for 65th. He had a team-high four birdies in the final round, along with nine pars; he was even through 14 holes but a double bogey on the par-4 15th pushed him back over par.
Senior Daniel O'Loughlin endured one of his most unfavorable showings in his two-and-a-half seasons as a Buff. He closed with a 7-over-79, which dropped him into a 68th place tie with a 9-over 225 score. Both Sunday's final round score and the 225 number for 54 holes were his highs as a Buffalo; in fact, he went into the par-5 18th hole at 8-over par and needed a birdie or better to extend his streak at CU to 95 rounds without an 80. He gathered himself and scored birdie to keep the streak alive; it was his third bird of the day along with eight pars, but those weren't enough to counter five bogeys, a double and a triple – the latter his first of the year and just third of his career.
For all his struggles, O'Loughlin still played the par-5 holes at 8-under par, tied for the fifth-best among the 119 players in the field.
Redshirt freshman Adam Matteson closed with his best round here, a 1-over 73, which enabled him to move up a few spots into a tie for 77th (from 84th) with an 11-over 227 total. He was much steadier in the final round, recording a team-high 15 pars with a birdie and two bogeys; his 39 pars for the tournament tied for third-most.
Two Buffs competed individually, their scores not eligible to count to the CU team total. Senior Victor Bjorlow fashioned an even-par 72 on Sunday and wound up tied for 47th with a 5-over 221 score. It was his best final round score in six tournaments this year as he finished with an eagle – the second of the season and a current team-best 10th of his career – two birdies and 11 pars with four bogeys.
Sophomore Kristoffer Max carded a 4-over 76 to finish with an 11-over 227, tying him for 77th with Matteson. He had three birdies and nine pars in the final round, as he was 2-over after three holes but held steady over the next 11, getting back down to 1-over before he had a bogey and a double over his last five holes.
"The tournament was a battle all week," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "We had so many good moments and shots but are making too many mistakes. Unfortunately one mistake hurts three to four times what a good shot helps. Our competitiveness was great and I am confident we will get it fixed."
Wyoming's Tyler Severin shot the best score in the final round – a 6-under 66 – and used it to jump from ninth place into medalist honors with an overall score of 9-under 207. That was good for a two-stroke win over Auburn's Greysen Huff. First and second round leader, Oregon's Tom Guent, slipped into third, three shots back.
The Buffaloes will return to action two weeks from Monday, traveling to west coast to participate in the Lamkin San Diego Classic, March 9-10.
NOTES: The average score for the tournament (357 rounds) was 74.55 – Sunday's average was the lowest of the three rounds at 74.06 … There were 27 players who finished under par, while another three turned in even-par efforts; 38 player finished at plus-12 or higher … The Buffalo scorers tied for the 10th most birdies (44) and the seventh-most pars (163) … Colorado played the par-3 holes the second-best after each round, finishing tied for second with two other teams at 3-over; the Buffs played the par-4s at 40-over (10th) and the par-5's at 15-under (tied for ninth) … O'Loughlin remains the team leader in stroke average (71.65); how rare were his double and triple bogeys Sunday? The first time in his career he had one of each in the same round, and he has 36 of them in his career in 1,710 holes, or just two percent of his holes over bogey.
