All Six Buffaloes Shoot Par or Better

WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i — The University of Colorado men's golf team moved up three spots into 11th place here Friday after two rounds of the 29th annual Hawai'i-Hilo Amer Ari Invitational.

The Buffaloes turned in a 4-under par 284 team score, ninth-best for the day in the 20-team field, to enter Saturday's final round with a 4-under 572 total.  All six Buffaloes shot par or better, and CU is currently third in the standings of the six Pac-12 Conference teams competing here.

No. 2 Georgia Tech broke a tie with No. 19 Texas by recording a 19-under 269 in the second round, the low score of the event, to take sole possession of first place with a 33-under 543 score.  The Longhorns held on to second and are five strokes back at 548.  No. 10 Arizona State (550) is in third, while top-ranked Pepperdine and No. 4 Texas Tech round out the top five with 555 scores to tie for fourth.

Sophomore John Paterson and junior Cole Krantz are pacing the Buffaloes here, as both are in with 2-under 142 scores two times around the 7,074-yard, par-72 Waikoloa's King's Course layout; that has the pair tied for 40th.  Krantz fashioned a 2-under 70 with a steady round that included three birdies and 14 pars, while Paterson shot an even-par 72, with two birdies and 14 pars.   Over the two rounds, Paterson's 28 pars are tied for the most in the 123-man field.

Senior Ross Macdonald and redshirt freshman Adam Matteson turned in the same exact scores for the second straight day, owning 73-71—144 efforts (even) and are tied for 58th.  Friday, the duo both recorded four birdies with 11 pars along with three bogeys.

Senior Daniel O'Loughlin lopped three strokes off his first round score and came in with an even-par 72, his 147 total over two rounds tying him for 84th.  He had a team-high five birdies, all of which came in a row.   Starting on No. 12 and after standing at 3-over through six holes, he birdied Nos. 18 through No. 4 to get under par for the first time over the two days.  Only two bogeys down the stretch kept him from finishing under par.

Sophomore Kristoffer Max is competing here individually; he shaved seven strokes off his first round score by carding a 2-under 70.  That gave him a 36-hole total of 147 like O'Loughlin, tying him for 84th as well.   He had four birdies and 12 pars en route to recording the third-best stroke improvement from the first to the second round.

"Today's round was better as everyone played better across the board on the team," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "We did a really good job of competing and grinding during the tough stretches. The improvement within the team is really evident as Daniel has been struggling and he is so good that won't last very long."

The third and final round will begin with a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning; the Buffaloes will be paired with Pac-12 rivals Southern California and Oregon along with TCU.

NOTES: The average score Friday was 72.52, a shade lower that the 72.67 for the opening round (it works to 72.60 for 245 rounds through 36 holes) … O'Loughlin's school record run of 54 consecutive rounds counting toward CU's team scoring came to an end in the first round, but he's second round 72 did to start a new streak … The Buffaloes are eighth in birdies (36) and ninth in pars (109) by the five designated scorers (but are one of six teams not to record an eagle) … All six players have combined to play 216 holes, scoring 41 birdies, 134 pars and 39 bogeys, with just two holes worse than bogey (both doubles) … Colorado is playing the par-5 holes the sixth-best in the field at 16-under par and moved from 13th to eighth-best on the par-4s (6-over, just 1-over Friday).  The Buffs are still struggling a bit on the par-3s (9-over, remaining 17th) … This is the 15th straight year the Buffaloes have opened the spring portion of their schedule in this tournament (the 17th time overall).
