Top Competitions Countdown: No. 12, Tennis vs. Iowa

March 23, 2020 | General, Tennis

BOULDER - CU's 4-3 win over Iowa on Feb. 16 stands out as a signature win for the tennis team's shortened season. As a result, it earns No. 12 on our countdown of the top-12 competitions from the 2019-20 athletics season.

The Buffs went into the road match with a 5-3 record, but were not playing their best tennis at the time, taking a two-match losing streak to Iowa City. Additionally, the Buffs had not beaten the Hawkeyes in three straight meetings with their last win coming in 1986.

Snapping the losing streaks was not easy for CU on the road, but a key doubles point and three singles victories pushed the Buffs on top.

CU's 31st-ranked doubles pair of Sara Nayar and Monica Malinen clinched the doubles point, but it was their teammate Megan Forster who clinched the match at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 6-7, 6-1 victory. Freshmen Antonia Balzert and Sophia Derivan also picked up what proved to be decisive wins in the 4-3 team victory.

CU's tennis team went on to finish the season with an 8-6 record in head coach Danielle Steinberg's second season, the first winning season for the Buffs since 2009.
