Top Performances Countdown: Fontenot's Big Starting Debut vs. CSU
April 11, 2020 | Football
There's nothing like making your first career start in a rivalry game played in an NFL stadium. No pressure or anything.
Alex Fontenot was not fazed, however, leading CU's football team to a season-opening 52-31 victory over Colorado State at Mile High Stadium in Denver on Aug. 31. The sophomore running back rushed for 125 yards and three touchdowns in the win, earning No. 17 on our countdown of top individual performances from 2019-20.
Fontenot took his third carry of the game 32 yards into CSU territory to set up the first score of the game and ended the first quarter with 45 yards on just six carries.
With the Buffs leading by just three points at halftime, Fontenot took over in the third quarter. He scored a pair of touchdowns in the third, pushing the lead to 38-24 with a 14-yard score on the final play of the quarter.
As the Rams refused to go away early in the fourth, Fontenot again extended the lead to 14 points with a 22-yard touchdown run with 9:16 left in the game. CSU never scored again.
His 125 rushing yards were the most for a Colorado running back in his starting debut since 2013 and his three touchdowns are tied for the second-most in a first start.
Fontenot finished the game leading the team in all-purpose yards and scoring. He ended the season leading CU with 874 rushing yards, averaging 4.7 yards per carry, with five touchdowns. He had an additional 122 receiving yards on 27 receptions.
