Top Performances Countdown: Ewert Leads Offense In Upset Of No. 24 Cal

April 13, 2020 | Volleyball

When everything is clicking on offense, that's usually an indicator that the setter is playing well. That was the case on Nov. 22 when CU's volleyball team upset 24th-ranked Cal on Nov. 22 as Jenna Ewert dished out 42 assists and the Buffs hit .301 as a team, one of just four Pac-12 matches they were over .300 offensively.

It was also one of nine matches during the year she eclipsed 40 assists.

Ewert's consistency and even distribution helped four of her teammates reach double figures in kills, led by freshman Sterling Parker's 14.

CU hit .500 in the first set and finished the night with a .435 rate in the fourth and final frame.

Defensively, Ewert was strong as well, tying for the team lead in digs with 14 as the Buffs held Cal to a .188 hitting percentage. She also had a part in three of the team's 14 blocks.
"We had multiple players hitting very high percentages," head coach Jesse Mahoney said after the match. "Jenna is doing a fantastic job spreading the ball around."

"Shout out to Jenna because I was rocky in the first set, but Jenna does a really good job of just trusting her hitters and just distributing the ball really well," Parker said. "So, the fact that she trusts me even after I made a few errors to continue to make a change and make plays meant a lot to me. I think it was really up to her and just to build my confidence."

Ewert went on to earn honorable mention All-Pac-12 after her sophomore season in 2019, ending the year with 9.53 assists per set, 2.57 digs per set, 92 kills, 56 blocks, eight aces.
