Top Performances Countdown: Kornieck's Two Goals At Florida State

April 14, 2020 | Soccer

Taylor Kornieck had already proven herself against the best, competing in the Conference of Champions each week. But on Sept. 12, 2019, she got her chance against one of the top non-Pac-12 schools in the country, defending national champion Florida State. Kornieck, once again, was up to the task.

The senior scored two goals in a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss on the road against the Seminoles in Tallahassee, earning the No. 14 spot in our countdown of top performances of 2019-20.

Kornieck lifted the Buffs to a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute, heading in a long service from Stephanie Zuniga. It was a huge momentum changing goal. While play was relatively even early, CU was handed three cards early in the previous several minutes, including a red card to associate head coach Jason Green. Kornieck's goal quickly put the focus back on the game being played.

After Florida State was gifted two penalty kicks to take a 2-1 lead, the Buffs earned their own penalty in the 65th minute when freshman Tessa Barton was fouled in the box. Kornieck again came up with the big goal, tying the game at 2-2.

Though the Buffs came up short in overtime, it was a huge night for Kornieck and for goalkeeper Jalen Tompkins, who stopped nine shots in the contest.

Kornieck went on to another stellar season to cap her record-breaking career with career highs of 12 goals and 30 points to earn third-team All-America and become a two-time All-American. Drafted third overall in the NWSL Draft by the Orlando Pride, she is the only player in CU history to surpass 100 career points. She also led the Buffs to three NCAA Tournament appearances in four years.
