Top Performances Countdown: Boee Sweeps Two Races At DU Invite
April 15, 2020 | Skiing
Freshman Magnus Boee blew the field out of the water in two races at the Denver Invitational in January, picking up the first two wins of his career in the process. These back-to-back victories earn him the No. 13 spot in our countdown of top individual performances from 2019-20.
Competing in Minturn, Colo., on Jan. 25, Boee double-polled his way to a time of 28:54.8 in the men's 10K Classic, beating the next-closest racer by one minute, 12.1 seconds.
"The course had a lot of turns and small ups and downs," Boee said. "I chose to double poll, which is skiing classic without kick wax. That worked very well today, I had much better glide than some others and I didn't bonk off the steepest hill so that's good. I got my first win, I'm super happy about that."
His huge win that Saturday gave him a big advantage heading into Sunday's Freestyle Pursuit race. Starting the day with over a minute lead from the previous day, he held on for a total time of 55:11.3 to pick up his second straight victory. He needed most of that big cushion, winning by 15.2 seconds.
"I didn't have my best day, but I had my gap from yesterday and I'm glad I did, I ended up getting the win," Boee said after the freestyle race. "Today because I had a big gap, I didn't start off really hard, I tried to find a steady pace. I didn't feel like I was going super hard. I'm just happy I managed to keep it going somehow. I have to step up next time, but happy I got the win and it was a nice day."
Boee finished the season with three wins and five podiums in 11 races. He also had seven top-five finishes and 10 top-10s. He earned second-team All-America in the Freestyle and was a first-team All-RMISA selection. The Classic race was cancelled at the NCAA Skiing Championships due to the coronavirus pandemic.
