Tompkins, Klecker Named Pac-12 Tom Hansen Medal Winners

SAN FRANCISCO—Jalen Tompkins and Joe Klecker were announced Thursday as the 2019-20 recipients of Pac-12 Tom Hansen Conference Medals. Â
The honor is awarded annually to each of the Pac-12 member institution's outstanding senior male and female student-athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.Â
Tompkins was a four-year starter in the goal for the Buffs, accumulating a 49-23-7 record and setting nearly every career standard for the program. Â She ended her career as CU's all-time leader in wins (49), saves (369), save percentage (.841), games played for goalies (85) and games started for goalies (82). Â Additionally, she ranks second in CU history in goals against average (.90) and third in saves per game (4.34). Â She was named All-Pac-12 in some form each of the last three seasons. Â
In the classroom, she was honored on the United Soccer Association academic All-Region team each of the last three years and in 2016, '17 and '18 was honorable mention Academic All-Pac-12 and this past season named to the inaugural Pac-12 Fall Academic Honor Roll. Â With above a 3.7 grade point average and degree in Psychology, she was one of 26 CU student-athlete on CU's 4.0 Club for 2017.Â
A nine-time All-American, Joe Klecker recorded three of those honors in cross country, which includes runner-up finish at the 2019 NCAA championship. He won the 2019 Pac-12 Individual title and helped CU bring the team title back to Boulder in 2019 for the seventh time in nine seasons after a two-year hiatus. Klecker was named to the All-Pac-12 First Team three times, the all-region team four teams and won the NCAA Mountain Region Championship as a sophomore and junior to earn the USTFCCCA Men's Region Athlete of the Year award twice.Â
On the track, he earned his All-America honors in the 3,000 and 5,000-meter runs (three in each). He owns the Colorado soil mile (3:58.51) and is the CU indoor 5k (13:34.10) record holder. Klecker is also the second-fastest Buff ever in the mile and indoor 3k. His performance during the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships of 14 points is the most by a CU male at any NCAA Championship. He placed second in the 5k and third in the 3k. A two-time CU co-Male Athlete of the Year (2018-19 and 2019-20), Klecker was named Colorado's 2019-20 Male Career Athlete of the Year.Â
