Hodgkins Advances to Match Play at U.S. Amateur

August 05, 2020 | Women's Golf

ROCKVILLE, MD. — University of Colorado senior Kirsty Hodgkins has advanced to the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur after finishing stroke play tied for 48th after shooting a 149 (5-over, 73-76).

Hodgkins played quite well in the first round on August 3 and was tied for 24th at the end of the day at just 1-over at the 6,553-yard, par-72 Woodmont Country Club.

She started on the back nine and made par on every hole except for No. 13 and No. 17 where she recorded bogeys. Entering the front nine, Hodgkins was 2-over and after a bogey on No. 1, was 3-over. But Hodgkins is a calm and confident player and regrouped. She made four straight pars and then sank a birdie on No. 6. After making another par on No. 7, Hodgkins brought her score down to 1-over with her second birdie of the day on No. 8. She finished the round with her 13th par of the day.

After a decent first round, she had to wait until Wednesday (August 5) to play the second round due to Hurricane Isaias' expected landfall in the area.

Hodgkins started the second round on the front nine and had a very solid start to the day. She made four consecutive pars before sinking a birdie. Hodgkins would finish the next four holes with two pars and two bogeys for a 1-over halfway through.

But the back nine gave Hodgkins some trouble. She started well, making two pars, but following that up with back-to-back bogeys. She was able to finish the round with only one more bogey while making par on the other four holes.

The round of 64 match play will begin on Thursday, August 6. Rachel Heck earned the top seed in the field with a 4-under 140 (69-71).
