Boee Wins Freestyle Race As Buffs Third At RMISA Meet

January 17, 2021 | Skiing

MIDWAY, Utah – Sophomore Magnus Boee opened his season in style, winning the 10K freestyle race and helping the Colorado Buffaloes ski team to third place here at Soldier Hollow Sunday to open the RMISA Invitational at Utah.

Boee won his fourth career race and second career freestyle race. The interval start race was relatively close with Boee winning by 6.7 seconds with a time of 21:24.3.  There was then just 5.7 seconds separating second through fourth places behind Boee.

The men's team scored 77 points and the women's 76 to total 153 on the day and sit in third place.  The men finished second behind Alaska Anchorage and the women third behind Utah and UAA.  Utah scored the podium sweep in the women's race and leads the meet with 186 points with the Seawolves sitting second at 170 points.  Behind the Buffs are Montana State (126), Alaska Fairbanks (107) and Denver (100).

After Boee in the men's race was freshman Will Koch in 11th and senior Ryan Jackson in 20th in scoring positions followed by Wyatt Gebhardt in 22nd and Tyler Terranova in 24th.
On the women's side, sophomore Anna-Maria Dietze led the way for the Buffs in sixth place as one of six skiers to break the 13 minute mark on the 5K course.  Freshman Weronika Kaleta was just over the 13 minute mark at 13:08.6 and finished ninth in her first collegiate race while junior Ezra Smith was the third CU skier across the line in 12th place about 10 seconds behind Kaleta.  Freshman Ivy Eski finished 19th and senior Quinn Lehmkuhl 22nd for the Buffaloes.

Utah rookie Novie McCabe won the women's race with a time of 12:14.3, winning by an impressive 24.3 seconds.

WHAT IT MEANS: Boee put his mark down as one of the top college skiers, getting a win in what last year wasn't his strongest discipline.  Koch finished just outside the top 10, a solid result in his first collegiate action and Jackson should improve on his 20th place finish as the season progresses and he gets into shape after recovering from an off-season injury.   Dietze also picked up where she left off near the top of the field and Kaleta and Smith in the lead back is a good sign for the Buffs, but if the Buffs want to compete with the Utes, which had the top four finishers and six in the top 10, all of the Buffs will need to ski their best every race to compete with the depth of the Utes.

UP NEXT: The RMISA Invitational at Utah will conclude Monday with the 15K women's and 20K men's classic races, with the women's scheduled to start a 9 a.m. and the men at 11 a.m.  The Nordic teams will then conclude the DU Invitational at Maloit Park next weekend and conclude the CU Invitational Feb. 5-6 in Aspen before the alpine teams compete again.

TEAM NOTES:
  • In what was two extremely different races in terms of team results, the Buffs were consistent with 77 points in the men's race and 76 in the women's.  However, 77 points in the men's race was good for second and just 12 points behind Alaska Anchorage while the 76 points in the women's race was 35 points behind Utah's total of a perfect 111 points for its podium sweep.
  • As a team, the Buffs picked up seven top 20 finishes out of 10 skiers competing with three top 10 and one podium/victory.
  • Individual score breakdowns were Boee (40), Koch (21) and Jackson (16) for the men and Dietze (29), Kaleta (25) and Smith (22) for the women.
MEN'S INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
  • Boee's win is the fourth of his career and the 651st in CU history.  He's one of four current Buffs to have won a race alongside Filip Forejtek, Stef Fleckenstein and Joey Young.
  • Boee was the only skier in the top 10 that had each split time within two spots of each other.  After his opening lap, he was in third place and then he had the second fastest time in the second split but remained in second and used the fourth fastest final split to get the win.
  • Koch had a solid first college race taking 11th place.
  • Jackson finished 20th, a little lower than his normal performance, but he's also returning to top shape after an off season injury.  He's also stronger in the classic discipline.  It did mark his seventh career top 20 finish in his 10th career race.
  • Gebhardt finished 22nd in the first race of the season while Terranova finished 24th.

WOMEN'S INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
  • Dietze picked up where last season left off, finishing sixth to open the 2021 season.  It's her sixth career top 10 finish, all of which have come in the last eight races as she finished off last season consistently pushing for a top five finish.
  • Her sixth place finish is just two spots off here career best of fourth place in the freestyle discipline.  Previously, she took fourth at the Utah Invitational and RMISA Championships last season.
  • Kaleta earned a top 10 finish in her first college race, taking ninth.  She has been extremely busy this season, competing in 17 World Cup and Stage World Cup races from Nov. 27 to Jan. 6 before traveling back to the United States to prep for the college season and spring semester.
  • Smith finished 12th about 10 seconds behind Kaleta, earning her 16th career top 20 finish.
  • Eski earned a top 20 finish in her first career race, taking 19th to open her career.
  • Lehmkuhl had her 29th career start and just missed out on her eighth career top 20, coming in 22nd but less than seven seconds out of the top 20.
