McMullen Wins Pentathlon

USAFA – Colorado track and field sophomore Avery McMullen won the women's pentathlon Thursday at the 2021 Air Force Invitational to open up the season.
 
The sophomore scored 3,846 points, her second-best performance in the event. She tied her best-ever mark in the 60 hurdles at 8.62, tied for eighth in school history. She also had attempts at a personal best in the high jump, clearing 1.70 meters. She placed fifth in the shot put with a toss of 10.50 meters then came back and won the long jump by 20 centimeters with a jump of 5.88m (19-3.5). She finished by winning the women's 800 in a time of 2:35.52.
 
Four other Buffs marked their debut in the pentathlon, with redshirt freshman Jada Green finishing second behind McMullen with 3,277 points. She placed fifth in the hurdles (9.13), 11th in the high jump (1.55m) then stepped it up in the shot put to finish second with a toss of 12.13m (39-9.75) and bump her from seventh to third. She followed it up with a fifth place in the long jump (5.31m | 17-5.25) and finished seventh in the 800 (2:56.22).
 
Also for CU, Cheyenne Cheshier finished in seventh (2,970) while freshmen Kara Lucyk and Elise Gillett finished 12th and 13th, respectfully.
 
On the men's side, freshman Nick Bianco debuted in the heptathlon and is in 14th through the first day with 2,450 points. He will finish with the pole vault, 60 hurdles and 1,000 meters tomorrow.
