Gower Earns First Top-10 Finish
STANFORD, Calif. – The University of Colorado women's golf team finished the Stanford Intercollegiate 16th on Sunday, but individually junior Ellie Gower finished one of the best performances of her collegiate career as she tied for 10th to earn her first collegiate top-10 finish.
Â
Stanford won its tournament. The Cardinal entered the final day with a 20-stroke lead on the field and carded 7-under (277) in the last round, finishing 28-under (273-274-277—824). No team was even close as the runner-up, San Jose State, finished 6-under (846) and UCLA was third (851).
Â
The Buffaloes were unable to capitalize on the momentum they gained in the second round. CU shot rounds of 302 and 293 in the first two rounds, but in the last round, CU carded a 300 to finish the tournament with an 895. The Buffs finished one stroke behind Pepperdine (894) and were just two from Washington State (893).
Â
Gower continued her solid play at the 6,269-yard, par 71 Stanford Golf Course, finishing 2-under (211). Her weekend of play put her in CU's record book just about every day and her final score is the fifth-lowest 54-hole score on a par 71 course in CU history.
Â
She recorded back-to-back rounds of 69 to start the tournament and on Sunday shot a 73 with one birdie while making par 14 times. Gower made par 38 times during the tournament, which tied for the fourth-most in the field.
Â
Teammates Malak Bouraeda and Hailey Schalk ended up tied for 68th as both finished with a 230. Bouraeda ended up with her best round of the tournament on Sunday, carding a 74. She had three birdies and made par 10 times to improve two strokes from Saturday's round of 76. Schalk shot a 75 in the last round. She only had one birdie in her last 18 holes, but she made par 12 times.
Â
Natalie Vo tied for 75th overall, finishing with a 232. She made par six times and had three birdies. Lauren Gooding shot an 80 in the final round and finished tied for 79th (236).
Â
Stanford's Rose Zhang led each round and won the tournament with a 16-under 197. She went into the final round with a five-stroke lead against Sara Kouskova (Texas) and did not let up. Zhang shot a 4-under 67 in the last 18, while Kouskova fired a 5-under 66 to finish with a 201.
Â
The Buffaloes will finish the fall portion of their season, November 1-3, at Pac-12 Preview.
Â
NOTES: Gower had two sub-par rounds (69-69) to start the Stanford Intercollegiate and she finished the Illini Women's Invitational with a sub-par round (70), which was three consecutive rounds under par. Those three rounds ties the fourth-most consecutive rounds under par by a Buff.
