Buffs Finish Ninth At Clover Cup

MESA, Ariz. – The Colorado women's golf team finished ninth at the Clover Cup on Sunday in its' second event of the week, posting a 24-over 888 score for the weekend.
Arizona State took home the tournament title with a 16-under 848 total. The Sun Devil had four golfers finish under-par and three in the top-five. Arizona finished behind its rival at 13-under 851 and the next team in the standings was UNLV at a 3-over 867.
Colorado carded its best round of the tournament, and the spring, firing a 290 at the 6,184-yard, par 72 Longbow Golf Club. The Buffs stayed ahead of 10th-placed TCU (895), Grand Canyon (903) and Cincinnati (931).
Senior Kirsty Hodgkins led the way for the Buffs posting a 3-over 219 which tied her for 21st. The Australian shined in her final round where she shot a 4-under 68. The round included five birdies, one bogey and 12 pars. It was a day of consistency for Hodgkins as she shot a 2-under 34 on both the front and back nine.
Sophomore Ellie Gower finished tied for 26th-place with a 6-over 222. Gower was strong on Sunday in the final round posting an even 72. She birdied four holes, bogeyed four and pared the rest. It was the Buffs' second-best round of the tournament behind Hodgkins' 68.
Junior Alisha Lau tied for 38th with a 9-over 225. Lau was steady in her first two rounds at The Clover Cup posting consecutive 2-over 74 rounds to start the tournament. She was on pace again for that score through 17 holes on Sunday before posting a triple bogey on her last hole of the tournament. Lau was up-and-down on her second nine holes off the day where she tallied three birdies, two pars, two bogeys, one double bogey and one triple bogey.
Junior Malek Bouraeda finished in a tie for 42nd after shooting a 10-over 226. After posting a 3-over 75 and 6-over 78 in the first two rounds, Bouraeda settled in on Sunday with a 1-over 73. She made par on the first seven holes of the day and eight of the nine on the back nine. She added one birdie and two bogeys to round out her card.
Sophomore Issy Simpson was two strokes behind Bouraeda in the tournament with a 12-over 228, tying her for 51st. A day after sharing a tie for the best round by a Buff in the second round, Simpson shot a 5-over 77 on Sunday. She was 4-over on the front nine before getting more comfortable and posting a 1-over 37 on the back nine.
"The bright spot of the day was Kirsty who shot 4-under and could have been much lower if a few putts would have dropped," head coach Anne Kelly said. "The team did a bit better but still has work to do."
Freshman Hailey Schalk completed as an individual and did well, tying for 26th. She finished with a 6-over 222 after carding a 75 in her last round. She recorded two birdies and made par on 11 holes, in addition to recording five bogeys.
Linn Grant from Arizona State won the Clover Cup with a 9-under 207. Her teammate Olivia Mehaffey was right behind her at 8-under and Arizona's Vivian Hou and Clemson's Ivy Shepherd tied for the third spot at 7-under.
Next on the schedule for the Buffs is a trip to Lantana, Texas, on March 27-29, for The Bruzzy.
