Buffs 11th After First Two Rounds Of Wildcat Invitational
March 08, 2021 | Women's Golf
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Colorado women's golf team had a rough day at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational and is currently 11th in the team standings.
Texas, No. 40 by GolfStat, is the current team leader in the standings at 14-under. The Longhorns posted rounds of 275 and 287 on Monday at the 6,627-yead, par-72 Sewailo Golf Course and is eight strokes in front of third-rated Southern California (279-291—570).
The Buffaloes, ranked 35th by GolfStat, recorded rounds of 300 and 302. They are 26-over par but are only two strokes from the top-10 as New Mexico finished the day at 600. CU also has a three-stroke advantage over UNLV (605) heading into the final round of play. There are four other teams listed below UNLV in the team race.
Junior Alisha Lau is tied for 38th and is 6-over (77-73). She struggled a bit in the first round. She sank a pair of birdies and made 10 pars, but also had five bogeys and one double. Things were going well for her in the second round. She had a bogey on her second hole and starting the round making par. Then she made par on eight consecutive holes before sinking a putt for birdie. In the next six holes, she would make par four more times and she would record two more birdies. The final hole of the day for her, the 550-yard, par-5 No. 10, gave her problems as she ended up with a triple-bogey to finish the round 1-over.
Junior Malak Bouraeda is one stroke behind her, carding rounds of 75 and 76, and is tied for 45th. She recorded three birdies and 10 pars in the first round to counter four bogeys and one double and in the second, she had one birdie and 13 pars to go with three bogeys and one double.
Junior Kelsey Webster is tied for 50th after the first two rounds. Her 8-over 152 (71-81) was a tale of two very different rounds. She had a great first round, shooting 1-under for the best round of her collegiate career. She had four birdies and 11 pars to counter three bogeys, which all came on the back nine (she started on No. 11). Unfortunately, her second round was not as nice as she carded a 9-over.
Sophomore Ellie Gower shot a 79 in her first round, but rebounded with a 74 in her second and is tied for 54th. Senior Kirsty Hodgkins had an uncharacteristic day and is 13 over after recording a 79 in her first round and a 77 in the second.
"Tough day for our team - mainly putting woes," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Kirsty had an off day as did Malak; that makes for a tough day when our top two players struggle a bit. Everyone really fought hard all day. We just could not get the momentum going our way. Alisha was making a really nice comeback in round two but unfortunately had a rough last hole. Kelsey was a real bright spot in the first round and even though her second round didn't go well, I think she proved to herself what she is capable of in college golf. We will regroup and go give it our best effort tomorrow. Malak and Kirsty are proven competitors and will come back strong."
USC's Allisen Corpuz, who is 7-under after two rounds, leads the field (137) by a stroke. She is one of nine who are currently under par for the tournament.
The final round will start at 8 a.m. MT Tuesday, March 9. Colorado is paired with UNLV and will start on holes No. 12 and No. 13.
