Four Buffaloes In The Top 30
CHULA VISTA, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team overcame tough conditions here Tuesday and moved up a spot into a tie for third place after the second round of the 14th Annual Lamkin San Diego Classic.
UCLA shot the best score of the day, an even par 288, and the 118th-ranked Bruins zoomed into the lead with a 1-under team score of 575. Only one other team was within seven strokes of par in the second round, which saw temperatures remain in the 50s and winds gusting at times to 20 miles per hour, putting the wind chill factor in the 40s. No. 67 Nevada moved into second place, nine back at 584.
The Buffaloes, No. 84 by GolfStat, are tied for third with No. 22 New Mexico, 10 strokes off the pace at 9-over 585.
Co-host and No. 51 San Diego and No. 46 Southern California are tied for fifth with 12-over 588 scores.
CU had a 10-over 298 total Tuesday after being one of four schools under par heading into the day. It was still the fifth-best team score in the second round, but the third best by any school that was in the top 10 after round one.
"The guys really battled out there today," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "Very tough conditions overall, kind of like the U.S. Open with the hole locations and green speeds, then throw in the gusting winds. They did a really nice job of staying patient."
The average score Tuesday was 77.10 for 112 rounds, almost two-and-a-half strokes higher than Monday, when 26 players were under par with another six in at even. In the second round, just four players bettered par and another four equaled it, and through 36 holes, just seven players are in red numbers.
Senior Daniel O'Loughlin is tied for eighth individually after carding a 3-over 75; that pushed him back to an even-par 144 through 36 holes. He had two birdies, 11 pars and five bogeys Tuesday on the 7,033-yard, par-72 San Diego Country Club course. He was 3-over fairly quickly after six holes, but then played the remaining two-thirds of his round even to remain in the top 10.
Senior Victor Bjorlow and junior John Paterson are tied for 26th, as both concluded the second round with 3-over 147 scores. Bjorlow shot a 3-over 75 with one birdie, 13 pars and four bogeys, while Paterson tied for the team-best round Tuesday with a 2-over 74. He had two birdies and 12 pars against four bogeys.
O'Loughlin, Bjorlow and Paterson are all tied for the fifth-most pars with 24 in the 112-man field.
Redshirt freshman Canon Olkowski turned in a second consecutive 2-over 74, matching the team-best Tuesday, which has him tied for 30th with a 4-over 148 score. He fashioned his score in the same way as he did Monday, recording three birdies and 10 pars with five bogeys. He was 1-under through eight but had three bogeys over his final 10 holes.
Sophomore Adam Matteson had his struggles from the start Tuesday, as he opened with a double bogey on No. 1; while he bounced right back with what would be his lone birdie of the day, he had four bogeys and another double over the next five holes to zoom to 7-over through seven. He had his first of six pars on No. 8, but had five more bogeys the rest of the way en route to a 12-over 84 and a 13-over 157 score overall, which has him tied for 89th.
UCLA's Devin Bling shot a 69 for a two-round total of 7-under 137, which is good for a three stroke lead over Denver's Jackson Solem and San Diego's Ryan Bisharat. Twenty-two players are within five shots of second place.
The third and final round is set for Wednesday. Colorado will be paired with the other top three teams, UCLA, New Mexico and Nevada and will tee off on No. 1 starting at 9:50 a.m. MST.
NOTES: The Buffaloes are contending for their first win in a tournament outside the state's borders since the 2016 Wyoming Classic … Colorado is the only school in the 20-team field to have four players in the top 30 … Colorado has the 11th-most birdies (25) and the third-most pars (107) after two rounds of play … CU has played the par-3 holes fourth-best so far (+11), and is playing the par-4 holes at 21-over (seventh) and the par-5's at 9-under (fifth) … The average score through two rounds (223 total) was 75.92.
