Buffs Finish Tied for 11th At Silverado Showdown
April 07, 2021 | Women's Golf
NAPA, Calif. – The Colorado women's golf team recorded its best round of the Silverado Showdown on Wednesday, moving the Buffaloes into a tie for 11th-place on the final day. Â
Â
Southern California, ranked 13th by Golfstat, moved up from second to first in the final round to win the tournament. The Trojans fired a 7-under 281 in the third round and finished with a 2-under 862 (291-290-281). They moved past UCLA, the No. 31 team by Golfstat, which had led the field after the first two rounds. But the Bruins recorded a 291 in the third round and the four-stroke lead they held heading into the last round vanished. UCLA carded an 868 overall to finish second (288-289-291) but was still well in front of the third-place team, Oregon State (885).
Â
CU fired a 298, which was an eight-stroke improvement from its previous two rounds from Monday and Tuesday as the Buffaloes shot a 306 on both days. The 298 ties for the seventh-best round Colorado has recorded this spring. The Buffs finished their tournament with a 910 (306-306-298) and tied with UNLV (296-312-302). CU and UNLV were one stroke behind 10th-place California (909) and finished in front of 13th-place San Diego State (914).
Â
Junior Malak Bouraeda recorded her second straight top-20 finish as she tied for 13th overall with a 220 (74-75-71). This is her fourth top-20 finish this season and the seventh of her career. It's also the third time this season she has scored a 220 or better, bringing her career count to five.
Â
Bouraeda's final round was her best of the event. She fired a 71 that included five birdies. She also made par nine times and had four bogeys. She was 1-under (35) on the front nine and finished even (36) on the back nine.
Â
Freshman Hailey Schalk moved up 16 positions, finishing tied for 31st. Like Bouraeda, she saved her best round for last, firing a 1-over 73 to card a 227 for the tournament (76-78-73). She had one less birdie than Bouraeda with four, but like her teammate, made par on nine holes. Schalk also recorded five bogeys. She was 2-over on the front nine (38), but 1-under on the back nine (35).
Â
Sophomore Ellie Gower had a nice round and took a stroke off her second round as she carded a 75. She played a very consistent round with two birdies and made par on 12 holes. She also had three bogeys and one double-bogey. She finished with a 231 (80-76-75), showing improvement in each round as she tied for 47th.
Â
Senior Kirsty Hodgkins and junior Alisha Lau had an off tournament for CU. Hodgkins ended up tied for 59th with a 236, while Lau placed 67th (240).
Â
"It was a good showing by our younger players today; very impressive rounds by Malak and Hailey and solid play from Ellie Gower," Colorado coach Anne Kelly said. "The course once again was very challenging; greens similar to what players will see at the Masters this week. We just need a couple of other players to get going so we can make a good run in the Pac-12 later this month!"
Â
Sophomore Issy Simpson and senior Elle Otten also wrapped up play as individuals at the tournament. Simpson placed 61st (237), while Otten was 73rd (250).
Â
Oregon State's Ellie Slama hung on for the win despite shooting her highest round in the tournament, a 1-over 73. Her final scorecard was an 8-under 208 (67-68-73), which bested the runner-up, USC's Allisen Corpuz, by one stroke (70-71-72—209).
