Arizona Rolls Past Colorado

TUCSON – The Arizona Wildcats cruised to an easy 6-1 win over the Colorado women's tennis team at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center Friday afternoon after a close doubles-point finish.
 
The Buffaloes fall to 8-10 this season with a 2-6 Pac-12 record. Arizona improves to 12-10 and picks up its first conference win this season in eight tries.
 
Colorado's Maria Campos and Ky Ecton sailed to a 6-0 win in the No.3 doubles match, putting the Buffaloes in good position to win the doubles point. Arizona responded however, as Gitte Heynemans and Kayla Wilkins won the No.2 doubles match by a score of 7-5. Both the No.1 and No.2 doubles matches were tied at 5-5 late into the double's series.
 
The Wildcats won the No.1 doubles match by a score of 7-6(7-2), clinching the doubles point and a 1-0 lead entering singles play. Arizona built their momentum in doubles play and carried it over into the singles matches. The Wildcats won the first three singles matches, each in straight sets.
 
In the No.2 singles match, Wilkins continued her impressive day for Arizona, defeating Sophia Derivan 6-2, 6-1, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. Shortly after, Khim Iglupas took down Ecton of Colorado by a score of 6-3, 6-2.
 
Now with a commanding 3-0 lead, Arizona clinched the victory as Heynemans beat Antonia Balzert 6-3, 6-1 in the No.5 singles match. The Wildcats won another as Jelena Lukic defeated Sara Nayar in the No.1 singles match in straight sets by a score of 7-6(7-3), 6-1 to take a 5-0 lead.
 
Colorado began to play better in the final two matches of singles play, both the No.3 and No.4 singles matches went to a third set. In the No.3 singles match, Campos defeated Talya Zandberg to clinch the first and only point of the match for the Buffaloes, by a score of 6-1, 4-6, 10-6. Abby Amos defeated Megan Forster in the No.4 singles match 6-3, 4-6, 10-4.
 
Colorado takes on No.36/33-ranked Arizona State Saturday at noon in Tempe.
