Colorado Closes Out ITA Regionals

LAS VEGAS – The University of Colorado women's tennis team finished up action here Saturday in the ITA Mountain Regional Championships.

The Buffaloes tandem of Mila Stanojevic and Elys Ventura competed in the semifinals of the doubles tournament against Katherine Jhang and Leonie Hope of New Mexico. The teams played a three-set doubles match, with CU taking the first set 6-4. New Mexico sent it to a third-set tiebreaker after a 6-2 victory in the second, then took the semifinals win 10-6. Because BYU doesn't compete on Sundays, New Mexico took the championship.

Colorado also competed in six extra singles matches and a pair of extra doubles matches today. The Buffs went 1-1 in doubles with Antonia Balzert and Aya El Sayed defeating a team from Wyoming 6-4, while Betina Tokac and Ellen Puzak fell to a pair of sisters from Idaho State 6-2.

In singles play, Colorado went 5-1 in extra matches. Balzert defeated BYU's Emmie Moore 6-2, 6-3, while Stanojevic defeated the Cougar's Emilee Astle 6-1, 6-2. The Buffs won four total matches against BYU today with Anya Nelson coming back 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 against Madison Smith and Tokac taking down Avery Pope without letting up a single game, 6-0, 6-0.

Colorado will finish out the fall tournament season in the Colorado Cup the first week of November.
