Buffs At USC: Quick Facts & Figures

November 11, 2022 | Football, Neill Woelk

COLORADO BUFFALOES (1-8, 1-5 Pac-12)
at No. 8 USC TROJANS (8-1, 6-1 Pac-12)

LOS ANGELES — The Colorado Buffaloes have one more chance to score a victory over Southern California on the Trojans' home turf.

Next year, the Trojans will pay a visit to Boulder for their annual Pac-12 matchup with the Buffs.

But in 2024, USC heads to the Big Ten. Unless the two schools juggle their future non-conference schedules, this will very likely be the last meeting between the two in Los Angeles for the foreseeable future.

How to watch, listen and follow Friday's game:

KICKOFF:  7:30 p.m. (MT), Los Angeles Coliseum (77,500)

TV, RADIO: The radio broadcast will be carried by KOA (850 AM, 94.1 FM) with Voice of the Buffs Mark Johnson and Gary Barnett in the booth. KOA's coverage begins at 5:30 p.m. with the pregame show. FS1 will carry the telecast with Alex Faust and Petros Papadakis on the call.

ON THE INTERNET: The game can be heard on the internet at CUBuffs.com and www.850koa.com in the Denver-Boulder metro area. Live statistics will also be available at CUBuffs.com.

THE COACHES: Colorado interim head coach Mike Sanford, previously CU's offensive coordinator, is 1-3 at the Colorado helm.

Lincoln Riley is in his first year as USC's head coach, where he is 8-1. Riley previously served as Oklahoma's head coach, where he was 55-10.

THE SERIES: The Buffs trail the all-time series 15-0, including a 10-0 count since Colorado joined the Pac-12 in 2011 and 7-0 in Los Angeles.

WHAT'S AT STAKE:  The Buffs are one of four Pac-12 teams with just one conference victory and could move up out of the conference basement with a win.

LAST OUTING: Colorado lost at home to Oregon, 49-10. USC withstood a 21-point fourth quarter from Cal to hang on to a 42-35 win at home.

TEAM LEADERS: Colorado quarterback J.T. Shrout has started five games amd thrown for 976 yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions. Deion Smith leads CU in rushing with 381 yards and two touchdowns on 75 carries. CU's leading receiver, Jordyn Tyson (22-470, four touchdowns) is out for the remainder of the season with an injury. Daniel Arias and Montana Lemonious-Craig each have 19 catches.

Defensively, safety Trevor Woods has a team-best 79 tackles, along with two forced fumbles and an interception. Linebacker Josh Chandler-Semedo has 77 tackles, with 12.5 for loss, including 2.5 sacks. Cornerback Nikko Reed has a team-leading five pass breakups.

Southern California is led by quarterback Caleb Williams, who has put up Heisman-worthy numbers. Williams has thrown for 2,742 yards and 28 touchdowns while throwing just one interception thus far this year. Running back Travis Dye has 858 yards rushing with nine touchdowns, including at least one score in each of the last eight games. (The last Trojan to have a rushing touchdown in at least eight straight games was Marcus Allen in 1981.) The Trojans have three receivers with at least 444 yards receiving, led by Jordan Addison (39-585, seven touchdowns).

Defensively, Tuli Tuipulotu leads the nation with nine sacks and is averaging 1.7 tackles for loss per game. Linebacker Shane Lee has 54 tackles, including 5.5 for loss. In the secondary, Calen Bullock has three interceptions and former Colorado cornerback has two interceptions and a team-leading eight pass breakups.

KEY MATCHUP:  Colorado's wide receivers vs. USC secondary. The Trojans have an excellent pass rush and their secondary has provided some big plays — but they have also given up some big numbers in the passing game on occasion. Utah threw for 424 yards in a Utes victory, Arizona threw for 380 and Cal threw for 406 in losses to the Trojans. If the Buffs can give quarterback J.T. Shrout a little time, CU's receivers have a chance to find some seams in the USC secondary.

UP NEXT: The Buffs travel to Seattle next Saturday (Nov. 19) for a 7 p.m. (MT) game against Washington (Pac-12 Network).
