ZHANGJIAKOU, CHINA – Former Buffs Joanne Reid (Team USA, Biathlon) and Alvar Alev (Estonia, Cross Country) were in action Sunday as the XXIV Winter Olympic Games continue in Beijing.
Reid started 34th in the 10K pursuit race, meaning she started 2:11 behind the leader after the 7.5K sprint race on Thursday and first to the finish line wins. Reid finished in 29th place, moving up five spots, her second-best pursuit finish on the world stage this season.
She was perfect shooting until the final stage. Each shooting segment, she moved up significantly, from 34th to 31st at the first, from 31st to 26th in the second and from 28th to 22nd in the third. In the final stage, she missed three shots and had to take penalty laps and skied fast to maintain 29th place.
Reid competed in the 10km Pursuit three times on the World Cup stage in the past two-plus months. On Dec. 12, 2021, she finished 46th in Hochfilzen, Austria. She had a 50th place finish on Dec. 18 in Annecy, France. On Jan. 15 of this year in Brezno-Osrblie, Slovakia, she finished an impressive 11th place.
It's her third race in Beijing, she earlier finished 57th in the 15K individual, 34th in the 7.5K sprint and now 29th in the 10K pursuit.
In her time at CU from 2010-13, Reid earned seven All-America honors and four all-RMISA accolades, winning the Individual NCAA Championship in the freestyle discipline in 2013. She was a part of two Buffalo team NCAA Championships.
Competing in his first Olympics, Alev and Estonia finished in 15th place in the relay, being lapped just prior to the handoff between the third and fourth skiers. Estonia was in 15th place when Alev both started and finished the second leg of the race. His total leg time was 31:52.3, which was good enough for 11th in the leg.
His best sector was the 13.3 km sector, where he finished ninth with a time of 3:06.2. With a four-plus minute deficit when Alev started, he was unable to pass any other competitors.
It was Alev's first time competing in the 4x10K team relay on the world stage, never appearing in the competition in World Cup events.
During his time at CU, Alev took home All-American honors three times as well as being a two-time All-RMISA selection. He won the Lucie Hanusova Award in his first season with the Buffs in 2018.
Reid will be the next #OlympicBuff to compete in the Olympics. On Wednesday, she will take part in the women's 4x6K Relay at 12:45 a.m. local time (3:45 p.m. in China) for Team USA. The team is listed as 10th on the provisional start list for the event.
Alev and former Buff Petra Hynicova and current Buff Weronika Kaleta could all also be racing Wednesday, participating in the team classic sprints, which take place early Wednesday morning (2 a.m.) local time (5 p.m. in China). Not all racers qualify for the team sprints, and the start lists have not yet been made available.
