June 30, 2022 | Women's Golf
BOULDER – Madeleine Sheils, NCAA champion coach and former tour professional, has been named the Associate Head Coach of the University of Colorado women's golf program, Buffaloes head coach Anne Kelly announced on Thursday.
Sheils, who officially begins her position on July 1, replaces Brent Franklin, who recently retired after 20 years as an assistant and associate head coach on Kelly's staff.
Prior to joining Colorado, Sheils teed off her collegiate coaching career with three successful seasons as an assistant coach at Pac-12 Conference rival Stanford (2019-22). Sheils helped Stanford to the 2022 NCAA Championship, its second in program history. She assisted the Cardinal to NCAA Finals appearances in both of her seasons a championship was completed (2019-20 was canceled due to COVID) as the team earned the top seed into the final eight teams of match play, following 72 holes of stroke play, on both occasions.
The Cardinal won the 2021 NCAA Stanford Regional and tied for second in the 2022 regional on its home course. Sheils helped guide the Cardinal to back-to-back runner-up finishes at the 2021 and '22 Pac-12 Championships.
"I'm fired up to join CU golf and move to Boulder," Sheils said. "As an excellent academic and athletic institution set in the country's most beautiful college town, the University of Colorado is a dream location for me to coach and live. Coach Kelly is well-known for her kindness and care for her student-athletes, and I am grateful for the chance to learn from her. I think together we are going to make a great team as we look to compete for titles and provide a world-class experience for our players both on and off the golf course."
In 2021-22, the Cardinal was the unanimous No. 1 team in the country from start to finish, defeating No. 8 Georgia, No. 5 Auburn and No. 2 Oregon in match play to claim the national title. Stanford freshman Rose Zhang won the NCAA Individual title, capping off a season in which she recorded an NCAA record 69.68 scoring average. Zhang followed in the footsteps of her teammate Rachel Heck, who won the 2021 NCAA Individual National Championship and also broke the NCAA scoring average record during her own freshman campaign. Both Zhang and Heck were named the ANNIKA Award winner, WGCA Golfer and Freshman of the Year, Honda Sport Award winner for Golf, Pac-12 Golfer and Freshman of the Year, and first team All-American and All-Pac-12.
During Sheils' three seasons on The Farm, Stanford won 11 stroke-play events and Cardinal players captured 13 individual titles. Sheils coached five WGCA All-Americans, two back-to-back NCAA Players of the Year and NCAA Individual Champions, two World #1 Ranked Amateur Golfers, 10 Augusta National Women's Amateur invitees, and five Arnold Palmer Cup Participants. In March of 2022, the Cardinal set an NCAA 54-hole record with a team score of 50-under at the Gunrock Invitational (Del Paso Country Club, Sacramento, Calif.).
"I'm very excited that Madeleine Sheils is joining our program," Kelly said. "She brings a variety of high-level experience and skills with her to CU. The hard work she put in as a junior and college player to lift her game to an elite level, playing as a professional and working her way onto the LPGA is very impressive. Of course, working with Stanford, the current NCAA championship team and perennial powerhouse in women's golf, for three years will add a whole new dimension to our program.
"Long time coach Brent Franklin's retirement left a big hole in our program because of his outstanding teaching and coaching capabilities. Brent's loyalty and dedication will be missed, but I feel very confident Maddie will bring a bag of skills that will help fill that void. I'm looking forward to working with Maddie and excited she will be a Buff!"
A professional golfer on the LPGA and Epson, previously known as Symetra, Tours, Sheils retired following the 2018 season. She played on the LPGA Tour in 2017 and '18, teeing it up in 24 total events. During her four seasons on the Epson Tour (2013-16), Sheils earned one victory at the 2015 FireKeeper's Casino Hotel Championship in Battle Creek, Mich. and seven top-10 finishes.
Sheils played four years collegiately at Nebraska (2008-12), earning All-Big Ten Conference honors as a senior in 2011-12 and advancing as an individual to the NCAA Central Regional for the Huskers. She notched one victory at the 2011 Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational and racked up 18 career top-25 finishes. She was a four-time National Golf Coaches' Association Scholastic All-American and Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award winner. Sheils graduated from Nebraska in 2012 with a degree in Philosophy.
A native of Boise, Idaho, Sheils is a former Idaho Women's Amateur and Idaho Junior State Champion. Sheils and her husband Steven Moser reside in Boulder.
