Colorado Finishes Third At Golfweek Red Sky Classic

WOLCOTT, Colo. — The University of Colorado women's golf team finished in third place at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic at 6-over-par, 870, as the 54-hole tournament at Red Sky Golf Club wrapped up on Wednesday.
The Buffaloes had the toughest of their three rounds, shooting 7-over, 295, dropping one spot in the team standings. Kennesaw State overtook Colorado for second place with the best low score of the day at 8-under, 280, and finishing at 3-under, 861.
Pepperdine ran away with the team title, finishing the tournament at 18-under, 846, 15 strokes ahead of Kennesaw State.
Pepperdine took the top two individual spots. Lion Higo was the medalist at -10 under on the heels of a 67 in the final round. Lauren Gomez took second at 7-under while Sophie Bert of East Tennessee State was third at 4-under.
Staggered between holes 1-4 with the shotgun start, Colorado didn't get off on the right foot with four of five golfers playing bogey or worse on their individual first hole. The Buffaloes gained back a few strokes in the middle of the front nine, including an eagle by freshman Makenzie Cooper on the par 5, No. 5.
For the third-straight day the Buffaloes struggled on the outset of the back nine, playing holes 10-12 at 6-over. Colorado picked up three strokes at the par 5, No. 15, with three birdies and at that point were on pace to at least equal its first two-days – around even par.
It wasn't to be though. The same par 5, No. 18, where the Buffs were an astounding 7-under in Tuesday's second round, was played at 3-over on Wednesday. Collectively, Colorado was 6-over its final two holes.
"Not the day or finish the team wanted," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "We struggled getting started then settled down, but had a rough finish."
Freshman Morgan Miller tied for ninth overall at 1-under, 215, for the first top 10 finish of her young career. She had her highest of three rounds on Wednesday, shooting 2-over, 74. Miller was 2-over early with a pair of bogeys on the front but had climbed back to even after birdies at the par 4, No. 13 and at 15. She dropped back to 2-over with a double bogey on 18, the same hole she eagled in the second round.
Graduate Haylin Harris logged a top 20 finish, tying for 18th at 3-over, 219, after shooting 74 in the final round. Harris was at 2-over immediately with a double-bogey on No. 2, her first hole with the shotgun start. She played even the rest of the round, highlighted by birdies on the par 5, No. 5 and the par 4, 14th.
"Morgan had a good event and is a very strong competitor," Kelly said. "Haylin was also pretty solid."
Sophomore Natalie Vo tied for 22nd overall at 4-over, 220, after scoring the team low round of the day with a 73. Vo, who began at the par 4, No. 3, had a great start with birdies at No. 5 and the par-3, No. 9 to head to the back nine at 2-under. She slipped to over par with three bogeys in a five-hole stretch to begin the back nine. She finished even from there, highlighted with a birdie at 15.
Sophomore Lauren Gooding tied for 27th at 5-over, 221, after a rough day with the team's high round of 79. She was 3-over after the first two holes and couldn't recover from there. Gooding did string together 10-straight pars between 8-17, but didn't have a birdie in a round for the first time this year.
Cooper was 75th overall at 15-over, 231, but finished the tournament on a high-note with a 2-over, 74 in the final round. She started strong with her first collegiate eagle at No. 5, playing as her second hole of the day. Cooper stayed even on the front, but three-straight bogeys to begin the back nine put her back at 1-over. She climbed back to even with a birdie at No. 15, but dropped shots on her final two holes of the round.
"Overall the team played some good golf this week," Kelly said. "We need to hit better quality iron shots and keep working on controlling wedge shots, but overall we are progressing."
Colorado will return to action next week at the Barbara Nicklaus Cup, Oct. 3-4, in Dublin, Ohio.
