Buffs Fall Short Of Conference Titles
October 27, 2023 | Cross Country
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - The Colorado cross country program had two top-five finishes here on a cold and windy day at the final Pac-12 Cross Country Championships. The men's team placed fourth with 81 points while the women's team placed third with 87 points.
With the races taking place right off the coast here at Chambers Creek Regional Park, the wind was most definitely a factor, making it feel a lot colder than it was. Despite the weather, nine men's teams and 12 women's teams still had to compete for Pac-12 titles.
The men's 8K was the first race of the day, starting at 11:10 a.m. MT. Stanford, the reigning Pac-12 Champs, took the lead early and stayed there for the majority of the race. Washington threatened the Cardinal multiple times throughout and even took the first-place spot just after the midway point. At that time, Oregon made some big moves as well, sitting in third.
Later in the race, Washington and Oregon started to fall back, allowing Stanford to take full control. The Buffs were never really in the mix for the top-spot, however Austin Vancil gained a lot of ground in the final third of the race.
Stanford and Washington each ended up with two runners in the top-five as Stanford's Ky Robinson took the Pac-12 individual title. Vancil continued his success this season with an eighth-place finish in 23:09.0 while Noah Hibbard just missed out on the top-10 with an 11th-place finish.
The Cardinal won the team title for the second straight year, scoring 41 points as the Huskies weren't far behind with 50 points.
In the women's 6K race, the Buffs did better than they were expected to do. Being ranked fifth in the Pac-12, Colorado ran very well to finish third as a team. CU's standout freshman Karrie Baloga was the first Buff to cross the finish line as she placed eighth overall with a time of 19:34.5. Not far behind Baloga were Emily Covert who finished 12th and Ella Baran who finished 13th.
Even though Colorado's scoring five all finished in the top-30, it wasn't enough to overtake Washington and Stanford. Similarly to the men's race it came down to those two programs. The Cardinal and the Huskies were neck and neck the entire race, but Washington's scoring five was just a bit more consistent throughout.
Despite Stanford's Amy Bunnage winning the individual title, Washington won the Pac-12 team title by just two points.
The Buffaloes look to put this meet behind them to focus on the NCAA Mountain Region Championships in two weeks on Friday, November 10th in Lubbock, Texas.
