Buffs Host Adams State in Exhibition Play on Saturday
October 27, 2023 | Women's Basketball
Tip is set for 1 p.m. MT
BOULDER — The Colorado women's basketball team moves one step closer to the season this weekend, hosting Adams State in an appetizer that will lead up to the Buffaloes season opener against No. 1 LSU on Nov. 6.
The Buffs and Grizzlies will tip off at 1 p.m. MT.
Colorado was picked fourth in both the Pac-12 preseason polls and will start the season ranked No. 18 in the USA Today/WBCA poll and 20th in the AP. It's the first time the Buffs have been ranked to start a season since the 2013-14 season.
"We are really excited to play someone else," head coach JR Payne commented. "We've been practicing against each other for so long. I think we're just excited to see things come together. We've been practicing for a long time so we should know what to expect. We want to make sure we're disciplined, organized and playing tough."
The Buffs return 88.0% of its scoring from last season, boasting eight players back from last season's Sweet 16 appearance. Of those returners four of them slot into the starting lineup with Jaylyn Sherrod, Quay Miller, Frida Formann and Aaronette Vonleh all back and ready to pick up from last season. Sherrod and Miller were both Preseason All-Conference while Formann and Vonleh picked up honorable mentions.
Saturday's game will be the first chance for fans to see the team's eight newcomers on the home floor. Maddie Nolan and Sara-Rose Smith bring plenty of experience as transfers from Michigan and Missouri, respectfully. Nolan was tabbed as the No. 19 overall transfer by The Athletic. Adding to the group is redshirt freshmen Mikayla Johnson and Shelomi Sanders, who were both around for last season's run.
True freshmen Kennedy Sanders, Jadyn Atchison, Lele Tanuvasa and Ruthie Loomis-Goltl will get their first taste of collegiate basketball on Saturday as well.
"I'm just excited for everyone to get an opportunity to play in front of other people and to wear a Colorado uniform," Payne added. "We've already had a scrimmage and done some things so we should know what to expect from everyone, but the excitement of being able to play a real game is going to be fun for everybody."
This will be the second straight season the Buffs and Grizzlies have met in exhibition play. Last season saw Colorado coast to a 75-48 victory.
"Anytime you're playing an experienced team, which Adams State returns four of its five leading scorers, you're going to play against a well-organized group. They're athletic and like to push the tempo and will play fast. I think an opportunity to play against a veteran group like Adams State will prepare us for whoever we play down the road."
The only way to catch the game will be in person. The game is not being televised or available for stream.
