Buffs Continue Under-Par Run, Tied For Seventh At Ron Moore

October 06, 2023 | Women's Golf

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — The University of Colorado women's golf team registered its fourth-straight round in the red after shooting 2-under-par, 286, to open the 2023 Ron Moore Intercollegiate at the University of Denver Golf Course, Friday.

The Buffaloes are tied with Wisconsin and Oregon State for seventh place after the first round, just three strokes out of the top five. Host Denver leads the field on its home course at 16-under, 272, with a nine-stroke lead over California (-7). Kansas and New Mexico are tied for third (-6) with UNLV in fifth (-5).

Sophomore Morgan Miller continued her scorching hot fall with a 4-under, 68. It's her third-straight round in the 60s tying a team record set by Esther Lee in 2016 – and matched last weekend by teammate Sabrina Iqbal.

Miller is tied for third overall, two strokes behind the Denver duo of Anna Zanusso and Emma Bryant who share the first-round lead after each shooting 6-under, 66.

Miller put in a mistake-free round, making four birdies and shooting par on the other 14 holes. Starting from the back, she shot 3-under through her first nine, finishing with birdies at the 390-yard, par 4, No. 16 and the 486-yard, par 5, No. 18. Miller birdied immediately after the turn at the 478-yard, par 4, No. 1 and parred the last eight holes to finish her fifth under-par round in seven tries this fall.

Iqbal is tied for 24th after shooting 1-under, 71, her fifth-straight round at par or better. Iqbal started her round with six consecutive pars, before a birdie at No. 16. She dropped a stroke at the 159-yard, par 3, No. 17, but more than made up for that with an eagle at No. 18. Iqbal made par on eight of nine holes on the front to stay in the red.

"Morgan played a really good round, she was bogey free," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "I think Sabrina was a little disappointed, she didn't get the putts to fall like she wants to or really hit her wedges as close as she normally does. She was a little frustrated but I'm sure she'll come back strong tomorrow."

Freshman Francesca Sumcad continued her solid play shooting 1-over, 73, and is tied for 39th place after round one. Sumcad made par on her first nine holes before jumping to 2-under with a chip-in for eagle at No. 18. She stayed at 2-under through 13 holes, but shot bogey on three of her final five to drop to 1-over.

Junior Lauren Waxer-Gooding had the finish of the day. After starting out at 4-over on the back, and 5-over through 14, she rallied with three birdies on her final four holes to finish with a 2-over, 74, and is tied for 47th. Waxer-Gooding birdied the 292-yard, par 4, No. 6, after taking a bogey at the 183-yard, par 3, No. 5 and then brought it home with birdies at the 410-yard, par 4, No. 8 and 517-yard, par 5, No. 9.

Senior Hailey Schalk is tied for 65th place after shooting 5-over, 77.  Freshman Vanessa Ngo, playing as an individual, is tied for 32nd place at even-par 72.

"I think we did okay today," Kelly said. "We're definitely capable of doing better and I think everyone walked way knowing it was okay, but it could have been better. They handled their emotions really well today. Even when something didn't go right, there wasn't a bunch of up-and-down. They kept their emotions in control today.

"We need to hit wedges a little bit better tomorrow, and these greens have some pretty significant breaks to them. So we just need to make sure we do a good job of putting the ball in the right place and work on hitting our wedges a little bit closer because those 30-40-50 footers out here are very challenging."

Colorado will pair with Wisconsin and Oregon State in Saturday's second round, teeing off from the front nine, beginning at 8:30 a.m. MT.
