Miller’s 68 Paces Buffaloes At Ron Moore Intercollegiate

October 07, 2023 | Women's Golf

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — Sophomore Morgan Miller set one record and tied another to lead the University of Colorado women's golf team in the second round of the 2023 Ron Moore Intercollegiate at the University of Denver Golf Course, Saturday.

Miller shot 4-under-par, 68, to set a team record with a fourth-straight round in the 60s dating back to last week's Ram Classic.  The 68 matched her first-round effort, keeping her in third place heading into Sunday's final round at 8-under, 136, through 36 holes.

Miller is just one shot off the lead. Denver's Anna Zanusso and Emma Bryant both shot 69 to maintain their lead at 9-under, 135.

The season record that Miller tied will likely end up being the more remarkable one. Saturday's 68 was her fifth round in the 60s this fall, matching Esther Lee's 2014-15 mark set over an entire season. She will have at least eight tournaments in 2023-24 to own that record by herself, that is if she doesn't break it on Sunday.

"Morgan had another great round," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "She is playing some very solid golf."

As a team, the Buffaloes remained in seventh after shooting 1-over, 289. Colorado is still in the red overall at 1-under, six shots out of the top five. Denver continued to roll on its home course, building a 13-stroke lead over the field. The Pioneers are at 26-under, 550, with California in a distant second at 13-under, 563.

Miller had a bogey on the par 5, No. 2 - the longest hole on the course at 578 yards – but it proved to be her lone mistake. She birdied the next hole on the 446-yard, par 4, No. 3 and cruised from there as her 68 tied for the second-best round of the day in the field.

Graduate senior Sabrina Iqbal is tied for 19th at 1-under, 143, after shooting an even-par 72. She birdied No. 2, but had a pair of bogeys on the front to make the turn at 1-over. Iqbal climbed back to even with a birdie at the 170-yard, par 3, No. 13 and closed out her round with five straight pars.

Senior Hailey Schalk is tied for 51st at 5-over, 149, after an even-par second round. Schalk started off with a birdie at No. 2, and after a bogey on the 183-yards, par 3, No. 5, she finished front strong with birdies at the 385-yard, par 4, No. 7 and 517-yard, par 5, No. 9. She fell back to even with a double-bogey at the 403-yard, par 4, No. 10, but played even the rest of the way.

Freshman Francesca Sumcad and junior Lauren Waxer-Gooding each shot 5-over, 77, in the second round. Sumcad is tied for 59th overall at 6-over, 150, while Waxer-Gooding is tied for 63rd, one-shot back at 7-over, 151.

Freshman Vanessa Ngo playing as an individual is tied for 31st overall at 1-over, 145, after carding a 73 on Saturday.

"Overall we had a slow start but played some good golf the last nine holes," Kelly said. "Hailey made a nice comeback after a tough 10th hole. We hope to get off to a fast start tomorrow and see how far we can move up the leaderboard."

Colorado will pair with Wisconsin and UNLV in Sunday's final round. The shotgun start begins at 8:30 a.m. MT, with the Buffaloes teeing off between holes No. 8 and No. 10.
