Sophomore Now A Consensus First-Team All-American

BOULDER—Colorado sophomore Travis Hunter was named first-team All-American by both the Sporting News and American Football Coaches Association, the organizations announced this week, making him a consensus first-team All-American.

Along with the Football Writers Association of America and Associated Press also naming him a first-team All-American, Hunter is officially a consensus first-team All-American for the 2023 football season, CU's 31st overall and first since Nate Solder in 2010.

The NCAA considers five publications for determining consensus and unanimous All-Americans.  Hunter missed out on being just the sixth unanimous first-team All-American by not being a part of the Walter Camp All-America team, the fifth and final publication utilized by the NCAA.  The Walter Camp team does not include an All-Purpose, Flex or Athlete position on its team, one of the only teams not to include one of those positions.

For Sporting News, Hunter picked up first-team honors at the Athlete position and for the AFCA, similar to FWAA and AP, he picked up first-team honors at the all-purpose position.

The 64th first-team All-American in CU history and 60th player to receive some sort of first-team honors, Hunter is now the 26th consensus All-American along with the school's five unanimous selection, and just the 28th player to earn consensus or unanimous distinction.  On the 2023 consenus team, he is one of just three underclassmen listed along with RB Ollie Gordon II from Oklahoma State and S Malaki Starks from Georgia.

Hunter showcased exceptional versatility by excelling as both a cornerback and wide receiver during the 2023 season and was honored as the 2023 Paul Hornung Award winner. Despite missing three-and-a-half games due to injury, he accumulated more snaps from scrimmage in the regular season than any other player in the FBS.

Over the course of the season, Hunter played 436 snaps on offense, 566 on defense, and 30 on special teams, resulting in an impressive total of 1,032 snaps. This averages out to 114.7 snaps per game, or 121.4 when accounting for the omitted half-game against Colorado State.

Offensively, Hunter wrapped up the season with 57 receptions for 721 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 80.1 yards and 6.3 receptions per game. On the defensive front, he finished with 30 tackles, including two for a loss, along with three interceptions and five pass breakups.

Hunter stands out as the first player in at least the past 25 seasons to achieve 50-plus receptions and three or more interceptions in the same season. The only comparable performance was observed in 1998 when Georgia's Champ Bailey recorded 47 receptions for 744 yards and five touchdowns on offense, coupled with three interceptions on the defensive side.
