Colorado Set To Host No. 21 Michigan While Celebrating Morgan’s Message
February 28, 2023 | Lacrosse
Morgan's Message focuses on mental health awareness and suicide prevention.
BOULDER - The Colorado women's lacrosse team is set to host No. 21 Michigan this Friday at 3 p.m. MT at Kittredge Field. The team is partnering with Morgan's Message to spread information about mental health awareness throughout the game.
The Buffs' (0-3) season is off to a rocky start as the squad hasn't garnered a win yet, and CU has two losses by a single goal. The first was their overtime season opener against Vanderbilt where CU fell 11-10 and the second was their home opener against No. 10 Denver where the Buffs lost 9-8. The losing streak marks the first time in program history that Colorado has started the season 0-3.
Although the team has struggled to earn a victory, there have still been some highlights. Offensively, Charlie Rudy is leading the way for the Buffs. She's notched a hat trick in every game this season, is tied for second in the Pac-12 in goals with 11, and is 25th in the NCAA in goals per game with 3.67.
Defensively, Sophie Halus has caused six turnovers this season and is tied for 31st in the NCAA in caused turnovers per game with two.
In the net, Grace Donnelly and Danielle Heintz have been splitting time. The goalkeepers hold the top two spots in save percentage in the Pac-12 with Donnelly locking down the first spot with a 53.5 save percentage while Heintz holds a 52 save percentage.
The Buffs and the Wolverines (3-2) haven't met since the 2020 campaign when CU fell 20-7.
The Wolverines
Michigan already has five games under their belt. A close 7-6 victory over Central Michigan in the Wolverines' most recent fixture placed MU at No. 21 in this week's IWLCA poll and 17th in U.S. lacrosse magazine's poll.
The Wolverines returned 27 letter winners to the squad, including Tewaaraton nominee Maddie Burns. Michigan also brought in nine freshmen with six already receiving some playing time this season.
Michigan plays No. 9 Denver tomorrow before driving north to face CU at 3 p.m. MT Friday.
