McDermott Continues Solid Play In Finishing Seventh
PROVO, Utah — The University of Colorado men's golf team had its best round of three here Saturday, but it was only good enough to move the Buffaloes up one spot into an 11th place finish in the 58th annual Brigham Young's PING-Cougar Classic.
No. 44 and host Brigham Young easily won its own meet, as the Cougars staved off a late charge by Utah Valley in winning with a 40-under par team score of 824. UVU turned in the day's best round (17-under 271) and shaved 10 strokes off the Cougars' second round lead, but still finished eight shots back at 832. CSU Northridge finished third (843), New Mexico State fourth (847) with St. Mary's and Wyoming tying for fifth (848).
Colorado, ranked No. 56 coming in (the second-highest in the field), never got untracked as a team here this weekend. The Buffaloes did close with a subpar round (a 2-under 286) to finish 1-under for the event with an 863 score.
Sophomore Dylan McDermott led the Buffalo attack for the seventh time this season, as he tied for seventh with a 9-under par 207 scorecard after a 3-under 69 in the final round. In recording his seventh top 10 finish this season, he had four birdies and 13 pars with a single bogey Saturday, with 13 birdies and 37 pars and just four bogeys overall. He added to his school season record with his ninth subpar tournament in 10 events.
He played the par-5 holes at 9-under, tied for second-best in the 92-man field, and the par-4's at 3-under, tied for 10th; his 13 birdies tied for 14 overall and his 37 pars tied for 11th.
Freshman Hunter Swanson tied for 49th after closing with an even-par 72 for a 2-over 218 total. The 72 was his third-best final round effort in 10 tournaments this year (his second par effort with one under). He had a birdie and 16 pars opposite a single bogey, with seven birdies and 39 pars overall, the latter tying for second in the event as well as matching the most by a Buff in a meet this season.
Sophomores Justin Biwer and Tucker Clark both tied for 53rd with 3-over 219 scores. Biwer wrapped things here with an even-par 72, while Clark recorded a third straight 1-over 73. Biwer matched McDermott with the most birdies in the final round with four, with 11 pars, two bogeys and a double, while Clark had two birds, 13 pars and three bogeys.
Both had eight birdies while Biwer had 36 pars and Clark for 35 over the two days.
Sophomore Jack Holland turned in his best score over the three rounds with a 2-over 74, which enabled him to finish with a 9-over 225, which tied him for 77th. He had two birdies, 12 pars and four bogeys Saturday and finished with with five birdies and 35 pars overall.
Sophomore Jack Hughes competed here as an individual; thus his score didn't count toward CU's team total. He finished with a 4-over 76 for an overall score of 12-over 228, tying him for 86th. He had two birdies and 11 pars in his final round and seven and 30, respectively for the tournament.
"It was a really nice event by Dylan, especially since he had a mild back injury," head coach Roy Edwards said. "We know we're better than what we showed here, so we are looking forward to a good bounce back this week at the Pac-12 Championship."
Boise State's Max Charles ran away with medalist honors, firing a final round 6-under 66 for a 19-under 197, besting two runner-ups by six strokes.
Next up for Colorado are the Pac-12 Championships; the Buffaloes have a quick turnaround and will leave Wednesday as the event will take place in Palo Alto beginning this Friday through Sunday.
