Buffs Finish 17th At Chevron Silverado Showdown

NAPA, Calif. — The University of Colorado women's golf team finished in 17th place at the 2023 Chevron Silverado Showdown with a 54-hole score of 68-over-par, 932, at the Silverado Resort & Spa on Wednesday.
Colorado shot 23-over, 311, on the final day; five strokes better than Tuesday's second round, but it wasn't enough to escape the bottom of the team standings as the Buffaloes moved down one spot. Washington State finished one stroke ahead of the Buffaloes despite having the round's highest score of the day at 29-over.
No. 16 ranked Northwestern held off No. 13 Texas A&M for the team title at 9-over, 873. The Wildcats were 13-over on Wednesday after a pair of under-par rounds to begin the tournament, but still defeated the Aggies (880) by seven strokes. No. 30 UCLA was third at 18-over, 882.
UCLA's Zoe Campos won the individual title by three strokes at 5-under, 211 after shooting a 71 in the final round. With the win, Campos receives an exemption into the LPGA Chevron Championship, April 19-23 in The Woodlands, Texas.
Sophomore Natalie Vo was Colorado's top overall golfer at the Silverado Showdown, tying for 24th place at 8-over, 224, leading the Buffaloes for the second-straight tournament. She had her highest of the three rounds on Wednesday, shooting 5-over, 77.
Vo had a good start to the day at 1-under through four holes after a birdie at the 381-yard, par 4, No. 1. She finished the front nine at 2-over, and stayed there through 15, where she was knocking on the door of a top 10 finish, but had to settle for bogey on each of her final three holes.
Freshman Morgan Miller rebounded from a tough second round to have Colorado's top mark of the day among the five team scorers. She shot 4-over, 76, seven strokes better than her total on Tuesday.
Miller was 2-over through 11 before ending her round on a bit of a roller coaster. Miller dropped to 4-over with back-to-back bogeys at No. 9 and No. 10 before immediately gaining those strokes back with consecutive birdies at the 138-yard, par 3, No. 11 and the 363-yard, par 4, No. 12. Unfortunately, she made double-bogey on the 340-yard, par 4, No. 13 to drop back to 4-over for the day and finished tied for 53rd overall at 15-over, 231.
Senior Malak Bouraeda, in her first tournament of the season and playing as an individual, had Colorado's best overall round of the day at 2-over, 74. She made birdie right away at No. 17, but fell to 3-over with four bogeys on a six-hole span after turning to the front. Bouraeda rallied though with back-to-back birdies at the 344-yard, par 4, No. 8 and the 491-yard, par 5, No. 9 to get back to 1-over. She dropped one stroke down the stretch, but it was good enough to have the Buffaloes' third-best score of the tournament, tying for 61st place at 16-over, 232.
"It was nice to see Malak back in action this week after a long struggle with health issues," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "She played well."
Graduate senior Haylin Harris and sophomore Lauren Gooding had their best rounds of the tournament, both shooting 7-over, 79, in the third round. Harris finished tied for 88th place at 26-over, 242, while Gooding was 90th overall at 27-over, 243.
Junior Hailey Schalk finished tied for 83rd at 24-over, 240, after carding a 10-over, 82 in the final round.
Freshman Makenzie Cooper, playing as an individual had her best round of the tournament at 5-over, 77, capping off her round with a birdie on her second-to-last hole on the 485-yard, par 5, No. 16. She finished in 77th place at 21-over, 237.
Senior Issy Simpson rounded out Colorado's individuals one stroke below Cooper, tying for 78th at 22-over, 238, after shooting, 7-over, 79, on the final 18 holes.
"We'll get back to work," Kelly said. "We've got a little under two weeks to get ready for the Pac-12 Championship."
The 2023 Pac-12 Championship will be held April 17-19, at the Papago Golf Course in Phoenix.
