Buffs Wrap Up USATF Championships

July 09, 2023 | Track and Field

EUGENE, Ore. – Colorado had three athletes in contention on Sunday's final day of the U.S. Track and Field Championships at historic Hayward Field.

Former Buffaloes Sage Hurta-Klecker, Joe Klecker and Abby Nichols each were vying for a chance to make Team USA for the upcoming World Athletic Championships in Budapest, Hungry.

Hurta-Klecker was first on the docket for the Buffalo alum. She ran a 2:00.65 in the 800-meters on Friday to advance to Sunday's final. Hurta-Klecker ran toward the lead in the first 400-meters, hitting the first split at 58.54. Her pace fell off in the final 400-meters, closing in 1:02.66 to cross the finish one spot shy of a spot in Team USA in fourth (2:01.19).

Klecker, who made the team in the 10K on Thursday, was looking to qualify for his second spot on Team USA, running in the men's 5K on Sunday. He ran in the middle of the pack early on and would drop to 13th at the 3,200-meter split. He would have to chase down the leaders in the last half of the race, finishing just outside of the top three with a time of 13:26.94.

Nichols had to wait all week for the women's 5K. She was positioned 15th after the first 400-meters and was eighth after 800-meters, but wasn't able to maintain the moment. Nichols pushed to the finish, closing the race in 10th with a time of 15:27.02.

Klecker (10000m) and fellow alum Emma Coburn (steeplechase) will make their way to Budapest as a part of Team USA. The World Games are set for Aug. 19-23.
