Volleyball, Soccer, and Football speak to the media to preview their upcoming seasons.
BOULDER- The 70th Annual Colorado Fall Sports Media Day was held in the Touchdown Club to preview the upcoming seasons for volleyball, soccer, and football. Head coaches Jesse Mahoney, Danny Sanchez, and Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders spoke to the media along with player from all three teams.
The morning began with the Head Volleyball Coach Jesse Mahoney and players Taylor Simpson and Maya Tabron addressing the media for the first time since their international trip to Europe in June. The team is coming off of an appearance in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2018, and the 21st time overall. Mahoney looks to continue to build off of last season's success starting with defending Mountain West Champion UNLV on August 25 at the CU Events Center.
"We want to build every year obviously. We felt like the last couple of years we've had a lot of talent. We've had some things out of our control kind of derailed us last season. I felt like we added a lot of talent and made the NCAA tournament, which was gratifying, it also felt like we left a little bit on the table there as well. For me and for us, I think that's kind of the starting point and an expectation for this program. The next step for us is getting a seat so we're playing at home on the first weekend, right? Getting to the round of 16 and looking to move beyond that. Goals and expectations, we expect to win every match we play, and we play in a conference that that's going to be hard to do, but we're going to have to take the opportunity to get better every night we go out and I expect us to be a really good team this season and a fantastic team by the end of the season."
Fall sports media day continued with Head Coach Danny Sanchez and players Jade Babcock-Chi and Amaya Gonzalez for soccer as they prepare for the upcoming season. Sanchez and the Buffs will open the season on August 17 against Northern Colorado in the first home night game in the program's history under the new lights at Prentup Field.
"Like every coach in the country says we're excited, but we are. We will play in less than a week. We always kick off the fall season at CU and as [Athletic Director] Rick George says, we want to get off to a fast start, and that's our goal next Thursday. Like [Soccer SID] Seth [Pringle] alluded to, we have a new pitch. We already had beautiful grass but now it is even more beautiful. Lights which obviously has been something that we [have] really wanted and everybody stepped up for it and made that happen for us this year. Bench areas, we'll have some ad boards and some other concession areas and bathrooms. They are just really upgrading as they also upgrade next door for the 2024 track championships out there. We're ready to get going. We are a little over a week and a half into preseason. We don't have a lot of time, we're the same as everybody else. I think we're close to ready to go. We'll play a black and gold scrimmage tomorrow – kind of a preview of the team and we'll bring out some other practice players to get the numbers up. We don't carry a huge roster and we'll see how they do tomorrow. We'll hurt some people's feelings when we roll out the starting lineup and we'll peel those feelings next Monday as we build towards the game on Thursday."
To close out the day Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders and three players (Travis Hunter, Shedeur Sanders, and Shilo Sanders) took the podium along with another 25 spoke to the media after the eighth practice of fall camp in preparation for the season opener on September 2 on the road against TCU. Since the start of fall camp Coach Prime has said the players have done a phenomenal job progressing as a team.
"They're doing a phenomenal job. Pass, blocking, as well as run blocking. What was in my mind, I would just say killers. They have some guys that can move you off a spot and we have a plethora and I say a plethora of backs that can get the job done any style you want. You want power, you want finesse, you want out of the gate which is Dylan (Edwards). You got so many guys that can get it done I can't wait. You see this run into tech as well. The offensive line, they're doing their job and they're going to get some tremendous front. I mean Shane Cokes to start it off, comes to practice with his launch belt every day. You got several guys that can really rush the passer well. I think we've got a myriad of guys that can, from inside, from outside, they can go get their quarterback and also stop the run, and disable the run, and dismantle the run as well. The offensive and defensive lines, they're doing their job and they're in condition, they're in shape. Defensively, I think we have more depth than anything on the defensive front."
