IVAN FALLS IN SECOND ROUND OF MATCH PLAY AT U.S. SENIOR AMATEUR
TRUCKEE, Calif. — University of Colorado golf alumnus Steve Ivan had a solid week of play come to an end Tuesday as he fell in the second round of match play in the 68th Annual U.S. Senior Amateur.
Ivan, seeded 51st, lost to 19th-seeded Jody Fanagan of Ireland, 5 and 3. The Irishman got off to quick start, winning holes 1, 2 and 4 to go 3-up, with birdies on the former and latter. Ivan bounced back to pull to within one with birdies on Nos. 5 and 6, but was never able to get even.
Fanagan birdied the par-5 7th, and when Ivan bogeyed No. 9, he took a 3-up lead into the back nine. The two then tied the next four holes, then Fanagan won Nos. 14 and 15 to clinch the match.
Ivan, who played for the Buffaloes from 1981-84, had qualified for match play after tying for 45th in the stroke play portion with a 75-78—153 performance (9-over par), as the top 64 advanced into match play. He won his first round of match play over 14th-seeded Brad Wayment in 19 holes, rallying late to tie the match after he was two down with two to play.
Ivan joined the late Les Fowler as the only known-Buffaloes to advance in match play in the U.S. Senior Amateur; in 1979, Fowler reached the quarterfinals where he lost 1-up to William Campbell.
SWANSON LOW AMATEUR IN ROCKY MOUNTAIN OPEN
GRAND JUNCTION – Sophomore Hunter Swanson wrapped up his summer amateur play with a terrific performance in the 85th annual Rocky Mountain Open last week in Grand Junction.
Swanson was low amateur and fifth overall with a 12-under par scorecard of 66-64-71—201 on the -yard, par-71 Tiara Rado Golf Course layout.
For the summer, he played in 18 sanctioned amateur events and finished with an impressive 68.8 stroke average. That doesn't include a bogey-free 66 (-6) to set the course record at Seven Bridges Golf Club in Woodridge, Ill. To put the 68.8 in perspective, that would have led the Pac-12 and been fourth in the NCAA last season.
Incoming freshman Wesley Erling was tied as the ninth low amateur, tying for 55th overall with a 71-70-74—215 (+2) effort. Overall, 67 amateurs competed in the event.
14th ANNUAL COLORADO GOLF DAY A SUCCESS
BOULDER – The 14th annual Colorado Golf Day, the team's major fundraiser that brings together coaches, current and former players and supporters of the program, was another great success here Monday at Boulder Country Club.
Sixty-four players made up 16 foursomes that competed in the annual "Shamble" golf event, which this year covered only 16 holes with Nos. 2 and 17 under construction (the two best scores count per hole). The winning team included former Buffs Ross Macdonald, Doug Nock and John Souza along with program supporter Steve Shaw; the foursome was 32-under par with a team score of 90.
Head coach Roy Edwards created the popular event in 2010. The Buffaloes open their 2023-24 season on Sept. 8 in Scottsdale, Ariz., in the Mirabel Maui Jim Intercollegiate.
(The 2023-24 Buffaloes return six lettermen from last year's team, which finished third in both the Pac-12 Championship and NCAA Central Regional before placing 21st in the NCAA Finals. Academically, the team has now recorded five straight semesters over a 3.0 grade point average.)
