Get To Know: Casey Malone

January 10, 2024 | Track and Field

BOULDER – Assistant coach, Casey Malone has been with the University of Colorado track and field program for 24 years dating back to the 2000-01 season. He has been a big part of building CU into a powerhouse as well as one of the best programs in the country, but he hasn't always been a Buff.

After growing up in Arvada and attending Arvada West High School where he lettered in basketball, football and track, Malone decided to commit to Colorado State University for throwing. He had a tremendous collegiate career in Fort Collins earning All-American honors all four years, qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in discus all four years, and even winning the discus national title in 1998.

Malone graduated from CSU in 2000 and like many other college graduates didn't know what to do with his life upon finishing college. To pay the bills, he started a job on Colorado State's campus doing asbestos inspections, however that didn't last very long due to a position opening at Colorado. Shortly thereafter, Malone joined the Colorado coaching staff in February of 2001.

While coaching for the Buffs, he also competed professionally and was a major force to be reckoned with in the discus. Malone became a two-time Olympian (2004, 2008) while being the only American to advance to the finals at the Athens games where he placed sixth. He is also a two-time USATF title winner (2009, 2010).

While Malone was an incredible athlete with the resume to prove it, his passion now is to teach the younger generations the same skills and techniques that made him so great in the sport that he cherishes.

"I just love giving back to the sport," said Malone. "I love taking all the knowledge and experience that I've had and passing that down. I really believe in the portion of development that student athletes go through in a college career. And it's not just athletics, it's just overall development. It's such a pivotal point in a lot of people's lives and so I think one of the biggest things is to see them get to have this incredible experience of growth through college."

In his 24 years coaching, Malone has seen the program grow exponentially from a team with just two walk-ons when he joined the Buffs back in 2001. He has coached several athletes to school records, conference championships, NCAA appearances and even All-American honors. While Malone excelled as a thrower for a long time, he has since become a coveted throwing coach for Colorado.

"One of the things I love about the throwing events is it's such a phenomenal test," stated Malone. "It's this challenge and I love getting to put people through that challenge and trying to help them do things that they never thought were possible. That's kind of my biggest goal is to help them exceed their goals and expectations."

There is no doubt that Malone loves the sport and all the physical challenges that come with it, but to him track and field is much more than just a sport. Although he didn't truly focus on track until his senior year of high school, it has been a part of his life ever since and he has no regrets with his chosen path.

This sport has completely changed his life and now each and every day he coaches intending to better other people's lives and make a lasting impact on Colorado's world-class athletes.
