Anya Nelson and Ema Bubalo become the second duo in school history to be ITA Regional Doubles Champions

LAS CRUCES, NM – Anya Nelson and Ema Bubalo finished the ITA Mountain Regional Championships this Tuesday on top with a first-place finish in doubles competition, capturing the third set tiebreaker to win the match.

Nelson and Bubalo become the second in school history to earn this accomplishment. The first being Julyette Steur and Kyra Wojcik in 2014. The victory automatically qualifies them for the NCAA Championships at the end of November.

In the best of three set finals, Nelson and Bubalo fought till the very end to achieve the top spot. In the first set against Denver's Andrea Beltran and Marley Lambert, the duo fell short losing 6-3.

In the second set, the two Buffs evened the playing field, capturing the win 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreak.

It came down to the final set, and keeping it close Nelson and Bubalo finished the job winning 10-8.

"This was Anya and Ema's 10th and 11th match that they played this week in just six days, so for them to put together this run and performance was very exciting to see" said head coach Anthony Pham, "Blake also did a great job coaching them through a very tricky match. I am really excited to see them represent our program and the NCAA tournament."

Mila Stanojevic and Rixt Van Der Werff will also come home with a placing finish. Stanojevic took 3rd place while Van Der Werff holds 4th, as a result of a walkover. Both Buffs qualified for ITA Sectionals which will take place November 7-10th at the University of Southern California.

"Mila did a great job, and played some tough tennis to reach the semis" says Pham when asked about Stanojevic, "Rixt took a different route, playing the number one seed in her first match, and she played solid tennis. She unfortunately got sick before the semifinals match, but she showed toughness throughout it, and I'm very proud."

"In general, I am proud of our whole group, they all did a really good job both on and off the courts, competing, fighting, and supporting each other. They do the little things that I believe continue to help us build our culture and build a belief to keep our heads up within the group."
