Mila Stanojevic stays alive on the backside after day one of competition
LOS ANGELES – The Colorado Buffaloes tennis team opened competition at the ITA Fall Sectional at Marks Stadium Thursday. As a team, they combined to go 1-7.
The day did not start well for the Buffs, with all four athletes falling in the first round.
The first two competitors were Aya El Sayed and Betina Tokac who took on Maia Sung and Grace Piper from the host USC respectively. For both, the matches followed a similar trajectory. After dropping the first set both rebounded to force a third set but could not capture the last set to advance. For El Sayed, the final score against Sung was 3-6, 6-2, 4-6. For Tokac she ended 3-6, 6-3, 2-6 opposite Piper.
Freshman Rixt van der Werff in the next match for the Buffs found herself in a battle against Pepperdine's Vivian Yang. The first set was as close as it could get with neither able to separate leading to a 6-6 tie and a first-set tiebreaker. Just as the first 12 games were, the tiebreaker was within a point with Yang having four set points, but Van der Werff hanging in each time. Ultimately, Yang took the tiebreaker 10-8 and the first set 7-6 (8). In the second set, Van der Werff rebounded to claim quickly 6-3 to force a third set. For the third time on day one the Buffs dropped a third set, this time 6-3.
In the final first-round match for Colorado, Mila Stanojevic took the court against Washinton State's Elyse Tse. Against the former conference foe, Stanojevic lost 6-1, 6-0 dropping down to the consolation bracket.
Heading into consolation rounds, all but one Buff will continue into competition tomorrow. Mila Stanojevic moves forward on the backside after an injury walkover against Alexia Harmon of Pepperdine.
