Buffs Wrap Up Two Tournaments

November 10, 2024 | Tennis

LOS ANGELES & FORT MYERS Fla. – The Colorado Buffaloes tennis team wrapped up two tournaments this weekend. They finished at the ITA Fall Sectionals on Saturday and Florida Gulf Coast University Invite on Sunday morning.

The last two days of the ITA Fall Sectionals saw only a little action. Mila Stanojevic was the only Buff still alive in the consolation bracket in singles. On Friday she faced off against UCLA's Bianca Fernandez in the consolation quarterfinals. Stanojevic dispatched of her in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

On Saturday in the consolation semifinals, Stanojevic faced off against a fellow Big 12 opponent Martyna Ostrzygalo from Arizona. In the first set, the two were neck-and-neck, leading to a first set tiebreaker. During the tiebreaker, they both struggled to separate from the other. Ultimately, Ostrzygalo got the final point in a 7-6 (6) first set win. In the second set, while it was still close, Stanojevic fell 6-4 ending her tournament.

In the only doubles match in Los Angeles, Aya El Sayed and Stanojevic were a late add to the doubles draw. After a first-round bye, the duo took the court against former Pac-12 foes Sophie Luescher and Erika Matsuda. After dropping the first set 6-3, the second set was tight the whole way through. After tying the set at six games apiece the tiebreaker went in favor of the Huskies 7-6 (5).

Florida Gulf Coast University Invite
On the other side of the country, the other five Buffs took on Florida Gulf Coast, Memphis, and Purdue.Through three days of competition, Colorado went 6-0 in doubles play with duos of NCAA Qualifiers Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson and Lera Alexin and Pia Rebec. For Bubalo and Nelson that makes them 9-0 to start the season and 20-6 together in their career.

In singles, as a team, they went a combined 6-9 through three days. Bubalo was the only Buff to win two singles matches this weekend in either tournament.

Up Next

This wraps up the fall season for most of the Buffs. The fall brought many new highs for the program, the biggest being Bubalo and Nelson qualifying for the NCAA Individual Championships. They will travel back to Waco, Texas to compete for a National Championship. The tournament will begin on November 20 at Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center.
