Pair is first Buffs' to qualify for NCAA Championships since 2007
BOULDER – The Colorado Buffaloes tennis team is sending the doubles pairing of Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson to the NCAA Individual Championships in Waco, Texas with competition beginning Nov. 20.
The duo of Bubalo and Nelson had a difficult road to qualify for NCAA's. They took down five seeded opponents en route to an ITA Mountain Regional Championship and automatic bid. In the final prep for the individual championships, they had three matches at the Florida Gulf Coast University Invite. They once again ran the table-winning the trio of matches.
Bubalo and Nelson are a combined 20-6 through two seasons, including one week ranked No. 70 in the ITA doubles poll.
Bubalo and Nelson mark the first Buffs to have made the NCAA Individual Championships since Monica Milewski in 2007 and only the fourth time overall. They are only the second doubles pairing with the only other coming from Becky Callan and Shannon Riede in 1985.
"What a great honor for both Anya and Ema to represent Colorado at the NCAA tournament this week," head coach Anthony Pham said. "They've had a strong fall together and earned this opportunity. Â They, like the rest of our team, continue to make strong strides, and Blake [Mosley] and I are excited to see them compete this week."
Play will begin November 20 where they will take on Penn State's Olivia Dorner and Maiko Uchijima. The Nittany Lion pair qualified after winning the ITA Northeast Regional Championship. On the season, they are 10-1 together in doubles play with two ranked wins.Â
The pair will begin competition on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor University in Waco. All matches for the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships will be broadcast on ESPN+.Â
